Meet Marilyn Reles-Lozano

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilyn Reles-Lozano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marilyn below.

Marilyn , so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.

The ability to communicate effectively plays a huge role in how I do my job. And communicating effectively tends to look a bit different depending on who you’re communicating with. Learning to adapt to other people’s communication styles is essential. But finding a balance with how I naturally communicate is consistently my biggest challenge. I’m the kind of person who would prefer to have more information than less. It makes more sense to me. If I’m given a lot of information, then I have the freedom to pick and choose what is most useful and can respond or progress from there. However, if I am given very sparce details or information that is lacking depth or even emotion, it forces me to ask more questions. To dig deeper. See, I work in an artistic field. And art is driven by emotion. I am listening to the personal stories of artists every single day, and some of them can be hard to hear because of everything they’ve been through. It’s then my job to take those stories and format them into press copy, which needs to be compelling yet concise. So give me more and I won’t deliver less, but rather, a compassionate summary that allows others to relate and understand.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Marilyn and I am the Founder and Lead Publicist at Present PR. I manage PR campaigns for musicians as well as music tech companies, music executives, actors and influencers. I keep it boutique – it’s just me! I get the opportunity to work with some amazing clients from across the globe. I am very dedicated to my job and I’m happy to be ringing in 5 years this June!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

– The ability to adapt.

– The ability to listen.

– The confidence to listen to my gut, despite the noise around me.

There is no specific map or route to success, because everybody defines success differently. Follow your intuition, always. How you ‘feel’ MATTERS. Adapt to change the best that you can. Learn about money! Financially literacy is essential – the fact that they don’t offer classes for this in high school is absolutely ridiculous, because it plays such a huge role in your adult life. And take care of yourself! The rat race can be dangerous and can lead to some self destructive behaviors. Take a minute for yourself everyday – my favorite escape is the gym. If I didn’t workout, I would go nuts!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Hands down, my husband. He has always seen me for me – he has always encouraged me to see past the noise and to follow my gut. He sees my potential and I see his. We aren’t afraid to take risks, as long as we discuss it first 🙂
