Meet Kiran Joan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiran Joan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kiran, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

My work is currently directed toward two primary areas: design and fine art.
In the field of fine art, my focus shifts inward as I seek to communicate my internal world through the medium of ceramic forms.
In the realm of design, I’m inspired by the design and illustration community. It brings a sense of purpose to keep going, motivating me to continuously improve my practice. I strive to stay abreast of the latest design trends while refining my unique voice as an illustrator.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I work as a designer for a finance company in New York, focusing on designs and illustrations for our company’s magazines. Additionally, I am a ceramicist and recently completed residencies at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and a year-long fellowship at Baltimore Clayworks. I also had the opportunity to present my first solo show, titled “Friends from Back Home.”

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are belief in self, consistent effort, and having solid goals to work towards. I recently saw a theory about how beginners in the arts often develop a keen eye before their skills match their taste, leading to self-doubt. It’s important to persevere through this phase so your skills can eventually align with your vision.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I’ve been learning to code and developing skills in Cinema 4D. While it can be a challenging experience, it’s also incredibly gratifying to acquire new knowledge.
