Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Raven Chapman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Raven , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I suffer from social anxiety even though I am an extrovert. So I look at it like an acting role. When I am the odd woman out, I tend to read the room and energy of the people. Then it’s showtime! Sometimes you have to trick the mind into believing you are in a room with peers. Mind over matter works , always!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Don’t let social media fool you into thinking opening up a business is easy. It takes time, sweat and tears for real. I remember starting my business in the midst of COVID in February 2020 and I had the mindset that regardless of what the world is going through I would prevail. The beauty business is one the those industries that never really slowed down or stop. The best parts of my business is the unlimited amount of money/potential opportunities that is available to you and of course the way my client feel after seeing their untapped beauty. The fact that my client book not only because they get their desired results but the luxury experience that comes with every service. I also have been working on starting my own film production company for artists like myself. A creative space for creativity to thrive and grow, the sky is the limit.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My resilience is what kept me going despite what my old school parents would preach. Everyone is going through life and obstacles are made to distract but you have to keep going almost tunnel vision. If you let what you been through determine your life steps then you’ll be stagnant. I pride myself of being self efficient. If I don’t know how to do something better know I’ll be researching and teaching myself how to do it. Very rare for me to fully depend on someone else. Lastly , please continue to be a student of life . As the years pass and new trends emerge take the time to learn from your younger counterparts, it truly will save your business.
