We recently connected with Kelly Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
When I first quit my job to start my business, people around me were saying I wouldn’t be successful. They thought I would eventually be forced to go looking for jobs again. I think all entrepreneurs experience this and it’s because the people who are saying these things and the people who wish they could take the risks that we take. I just use their words to fuel me to be successful even more, and prove them wrong.
As a content creator, there are many people out there who think what I’m doing is frivolous or not real work. It really doesn’t bother me because I truly enjoy what I’m doing and it fulfils me being able to express my creativity as well as promote local and small businesses. If those people are not supporting your dreams, you don’t need them in your life anyway. I choose to be around positive, growth mindset individuals.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My background is in digital marketing and paid advertising. Back in 2020, I left my agency job to start an agency of my own and it ended up taking off and I eventually joined forces with a colleague. We had a lot of success together, but I ultimately realized that this business was not my true passion and we parted ways a couple of months ago. My financial success has allowed me to finally pursue my dream career which is travel content creation.
I have always loved traveling and I have been a content creator as a side hustle since 2018. Now I am putting my full time and energy into it and I am excited to grow in this area and really hone my skills in photography and videography. I have some upcoming trips planned to Alaska, Tanzania, and Portugal that I will be sharing on my Instagram and YouTube channels. I can’t wait to share my adventures with my followers and continue growing my audience and community!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Adaptability – You need to be able to pivot at any given time. The world we live in is changing at a rapid pace, so what worked yesterday may not work today. The people who are the most successful are at the forefront of these changes and are always ready to change their strategy while still staying true to their personal brand and values.
Confidence – You have to truly believe in yourself and your abilities or it will be very hard to be successful. No matter who you are or how talented you are, there will be times when you feel like you’re failing. If you allow these times to kill your spirit, you’re not going to be able to push through and actually get to your goals.
Strong work ethic – Some people may make it look like what they’re doing is easy, but behind the scenes they’re working their tail off! Successful entrepreneurs are thinking about their business 24/7 – ways they can improve it, new ideas they want to try, etc. I know for me personally, my brain never shuts off, no matter how hard I try!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with anyone in the travel industry – be it hotels, AirBnBs, airlines, travel products, restaurants, and really any fun experience type business. My content is all about trying out new adventures and finding hidden gems, so I am very open to working with different types of businesses.
