Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsay Hua. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lindsay, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
My journey towards self-discipline began from my early childhood in Manila, Philippines, where I was raised in a family of Chinese descent. My family was of middle-class background, and I witnessed firsthand the relentless work ethic of my parents, each holding down two jobs to support our family. Even as a child, I felt compelled to contribute, assisting with our family business by managing accounting books, handling petty cash, and overseeing employee wages, where it was all conducted by cash during those times.
Moreover, my education in an all-girls Catholic school instilled in me a strong sense of discipline. From adhering to strict rules to diligently completing homework assignments on time, studying well in advance for exams, and striving for academic excellence, I internalized the importance of commitment and hard work. As the eldest sibling, I also bore the responsibility of setting a positive example for my younger sisters, adding another layer of accountability to my journey.
Through the consistent practice of these habits, I honed my self-discipline, shaping me into the driven individual I am today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m currently engaged in a dynamic role at Afiniti, an AI/ML software company dedicated to enhancing enterprise-customer relationships across various industries globally. Within this innovative environment, I proudly serve as both the VP of Global Deployment and the Head of Diversity in Technology.
As the VP of Global Deployment, I steer the implementation and ongoing service delivery to our valued customers. In this pivotal position, I oversee all technical aspects and foster partnerships with their senior technology leaders, positioning Afiniti as their trusted AI ally.
In parallel, my role as the Head of Diversity in Technology underscores my commitment to promoting gender equity and inclusion within STEM fields. I spearhead initiatives aimed at nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce, amplifying voices, and fostering retention opportunities. By collaborating with DE&I advocates and STEM organizations worldwide, I actively contribute to fostering a more inclusive tech landscape on both local and global scales. As a fervent advocate for women’s empowerment, I lead our women’s ERG group, championing initiatives that uplift and empower women within our company and beyond.
Beyond the professional realm, I channel my energy into supporting two remarkable non-profit organizations close to my heart as a Board Member. Ignite Worldwide is the answer for young girls and gender-diverse youth worldwide, offering transformative STEM programs led by industry professionals from diverse backgrounds. I regularly volunteer to facilitate STEM workshops for students both in-school or virtually and bring along other women who are passionate about the cause. Additionally, my involvement with the World Affairs Council reflects my commitment to fostering global understanding and cultivating inclusive communities through meaningful dialogue and engagement. My family loves hosting young adults from various countries for homestays, providing them with an opportunity to experience our way of life firsthand.
On a personal note, I embrace life as an adventurer and avid traveler, relishing in diverse cultural experiences. Recently, my husband and I embarked on a two-week journey to conquer the trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp in Nepal, a testament to our shared spirit of exploration. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate our next family adventure, as we prepare to journey to Antarctica, the seventh continent, with our two children, enriching our lives with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The cornerstone qualities that have profoundly shaped my journey are perseverance, empathy, and a fervent passion for exploration. Throughout my life & career, I’ve encountered formidable obstacles, often navigating the complexities of being perceived and treated as a triple minority: a woman, a person of color, and an immigrant. I’ve faced subtle manifestations of unconscious bias, from remarks about my youthful appearance to inquiries about my origins and compliments tinged with surprise at my command of English. However, rather than succumbing to these challenges, I’ve embraced my unique identity as a source of strength and leadership.
Over the course of my technology career spanning over two decades, I’ve confronted each hurdle with unwavering determination, climbing up from the role of an entry-level IT System Analyst to my current position as a Technology Executive and DEI Champion at a company pioneering emerging technologies. Along this arduous journey, I’ve recognized the invaluable support of advocates, allies, and mentors who believed in my potential. This profound sense of gratitude has fueled my commitment to extending empathy to others facing similar struggles, offering a listening ear and practical guidance whenever needed.
My passion for learning and exploration is deeply rooted in my refusal to be confined by preconceived biases or limitations. I actively seek to broaden my horizons, embracing diverse cultures, forging new connections with people, and embarking on adventures that push the boundaries of my comfort zone. Embracing a mindset of openness and curiosity, I wholeheartedly embrace new experiences, enthusiastically saying “YES!” to opportunities for growth and discovery, even when it may seem easier to retreat into familiarity.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe in striking a balance between leveraging my strengths and actively addressing areas for improvement. While it may be tempting to focus solely on what comes naturally to me, I recognize the importance of not overlooking areas where I have room to grow. In navigating the complexities of human interaction and life’s challenges, versatility is key.
Reflecting on my experiences, I’ve found value in exploring both ends of the spectrum in personality tests, often finding myself situated in the middle of various characteristics. Interestingly, this versatility has me described by many of my peers and friends as having a “bullseye” personality, allowing me to adapt seamlessly to diverse situations and personalities. This allowed me to form deep, meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds and personalities, and I cherish each and every one of these friendships.
Investing effort in developing areas of weakness is essential for my personal growth. Stepping outside my comfort zone not only expands my skill set but also broadens my horizons, exposing me to new experiences and opportunities. At work when dealing with complex situations, these moments have given me the push I needed to grow professionally. This mindset also applies to seeking exciting adventures, such as my journey to Everest Base Camp. I never thought I could be physically fit for such a challenge, but with training, mental readiness, and hard work, I achieved this once-in-a-lifetime dream. Embracing these challenges fosters resilience and equips me with the adaptability needed to thrive in any circumstance.
