Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arati Misro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Arati, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Comes from a sacred place within. It comes from having faith in yourself. It comes from being grounded. You learn resilience from a ton of trial and error. I learn how to bounce back and try again. I have read countless books and articles about successful entrepreneurs and most of them share how much they just would not quit. After each attempt, you learn something new and apply what you have learned and try again. Resilience is like a muscle you have to constantly exercise. There is that saying to do something that scares you every day. What can be scary is reaching out to someone you feel is way out of your reach but that is your perspective that is limiting you. I see the world in a certain order and people are just people at the end of the day. We are all doing our best and I strive to make my life in a design that works specifically for me. Each and every one of us has our own unique gifts and abilities. We have to keep searching and exploring within ourselves what works best for us. Trying to be someone you’re not in order to keep up with the Jones is very painful and can lead to severe depression. It can be very lonely and isolating too. This is where faith in oneself has to come in. I believe each and everyone one of us has a purpose and its up to us to discover it and nurture it. I am very lucky to have a strong support network such as my family and my parents who have taught me to feel and have empathy for others first and foremost. Also I have a strong work ethic taught by my father who is a self made man. He also has no ego and rarely talks about himself unless asked. Nothing came easy for him and everything he has accomplished has been because of his resilience and hard work. I have learned from the best. If I am at a low and need to confide in someone , there is someone always there for me. I have a circle of trusted girlfriends and colleagues. My sister is a huge champion of me too. Always cheering for me and supporting me without no boundaries. We all want to grow and help one another out. We all want to see one another reach new heights and succeed. No judgment. My relationships are so important to me. Relationships are what exposes you to learning and growing. Associations are everything. I have had to distance myself from toxic people or those that do not want to reciprocate or give back. I do my best to surround myself with other leaders, with people who want to share information and help others. This is innate for me because it was how I was raised.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am focused on creating and producing commercially viable content whether its a film or TV show thats impactful and can resonate with a variety of audiences for the masses locally and globally. My training and craft in storytelling can cross over to serving companies with brand identity, marketing and communications. I embarked on filmmaking because its a powerful tool to use for awareness, education and social change. I aspire to spend more time in my motherland, India in the coming years and internationally making feature films and TV shows. I am especially continuing my efforts to work with diverse women and tell stories about women for the big screen. Look out for a feature films I am producing called Quarantine Island and Designed by Preeti. Short film I am producing which is called Awakening Georgie.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that were a huge learning for me are Emotional Intelligence, Communication and self esteem over all. You need all three to succeed in life. Find mentors and successful people to learn from. It’s amazing how much we can learn online and that’s been life changing for me. With all the technology we have, people are becoming more and more disconnected with one another. It’s imperative to understand people to have empathy. “Feelings’ ‘ is what makes us human. We act on emotion first , essentially what drives us to connect with the world and with people. Because of my background in filmmaking, painting, photography and music I see and feel the world around me in images and emotion . I think this is an advantage if you know how to use it.. A very dear friend told me in her own words, “ I honor the heritage of life”. Society brainwashes you to think you are weak if you feel or care for others. It’s just untrue. I think success is feeling more connected to others vs less. In fact, I connect with others more deeply than ever before because of my self -esteem which is another quality I mentioned that is crucial. Sometimes we don’t even realize that our self esteem may be affected. We get discouraged , tired and drained. This can affect our mental health and self esteem. This is a crucial quality to not only develop but nurture. I do a ton of mindful practices, spending time with nature helps me recharge and center my root chakra. Connecting with our bodies is important and being and feeling grounded is crucial for self esteem. It’s actually a lot of work but in the end you are benefiting from feeling and being healthy. I do mediation, walks and gettting back to physical yoga to connect to the mind , heart and body. I am thankful for my Indian heritage because that’s all I know . It’s much like exercising your physical body. Meditation and prayer is related to self esteem because it keeps you grounded and in touch with your true sacred self. They say your biggest super power is what you were weak as a kid. I had a lot of issues with communicating as a child and a teen. I also was bullied, teased about my name and I coped with it by staying silent. This also affects your self consciousness . Articulating yourself is so important in day to day life. Years later I have a degree in communication and I work with companies on voice and brand not to mention marketing and outreach under my business development services as well.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
First and foremost, my father. I have learned resilience from him and mental toughness. I have learned that you can be analytical and very creative all at the same time. He is one of the most creative people I know. He builds furniture, creates and designs our whole front and backyard. He is an avid gardener and also did a lot of wood paneling in my childhood home. Whenever I am in a rough place in life, I think of him and how hard he worked for my family to give us a better life in America . As a girl, I never had to worry about education or a child marriage. I never had to worry about food on the table or a roof over my head. My father gave us the stability and the foundation to build on. I got to attend a top film school and undergraduate program. I have 3 degrees from there as well as an online MBA under my belt this is because of my father.
I would also add my business School teacher, Chris Haroun. I recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their life. He teaches classes that are very affordable and that are a world class education. He helped me get over my fears of learning about finance. I realized because of him how much I love being analytical with numbers which has empowered me to do and be better with advising and partnering with companies , my clients and arming me with self -esteem and self -respect.
Depends on how you define success. Success to me is balance. It’s also doing what you love every day. I love traveling, collaborating with my friends and creating with them. I love supporting and nurturing other artists. Time with loved ones is success if you are present and mindful. I have learned success is working with the right teams and people. It’s not easy finding people with the same work ethic you have and even the same drive. Again, you have to keep striving. My success is my associations and who I get to work with. I get to collaborate with people who are veterans but also see my value and are giving me opportunities to overcome my fears, grow, build companies, create content and much much more. If you continue to confront your fears and never give up – I can assure you will find success and come out the other side. Success to me is hearing people that I have mentored say they felt safe around me or they are grateful to me for believing in them. Success to me is also about the next generation and paying it forward. Investing in the next generation so they can continue making an impact on society and humanity at large. I constantly listen to Tony Robbins, Oprah, Steve Siebold to name a few to remain in a mindset of success. I also am deeply inspired by self made women. Oprah is definitely one of them. I am a huge fan of Chelsea Handler, Viola Davis and Salma Hayek . They succeeded just as they are by being true to themselves. I identify with actors because we play so many roles personally and in professional life.
