Meet Salma Amer

We were lucky to catch up with Salma Amer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Salma, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Resilience doesn’t come easy for directors. The role often demands navigating through a multitude of challenges, including creative roadblocks, financial constraints, and managing complex interpersonal dynamics. Directors must maintain composure and adaptability in the face of setbacks, constantly balancing artistic vision with practical constraints. The pressure to succeed in an industry known for its competitiveness and unpredictability adds another layer of difficulty.

But I likely derive my resilience from a blend of personal values, supportive relationships, and a history of overcoming adversity. I find strength in the support of my family, friends, and colleagues. It can also be influenced by cultural or familial teachings that emphasize perseverance and adaptability. So, it’s likely a combination of these elements.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m Salma Amer, originally from Alexandria, Egypt, but I’ve called the US home for nearly 13 years now. Delighted to have graduated from NYFA’s BFA program in Los Angeles, I’ve been rooted in the creative heart of the film industry ever since. In my professional journey, I wear two hats as both a director and a script supervisor. Currently, I’m involved in directing short films, commercials and music videos, while also fulfilling the role of a script supervisor for features and TV shows. At the moment, I’m deeply engaged in directing a web series, pouring my creativity and passion into this exciting project.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Adaptation, leadership, and continuing education are the three most impactful qualities shaping my journey. Adaptation is about being flexible and responsive to changes in the film industry environment, while leadership involves inspiring and motivating cast and crew members to bring creative visions to life. Continuing education in the film industry is essential to stay updated with the latest trends, techniques, and technologies. This includes attending film festivals, workshops, and seminars to learn from industry experts, Directors can also benefit from networking with fellow professionals, collaborating on projects, and seeking mentorship from experienced filmmakers.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and look closely at what’s going on. I break the problem into smaller parts and figure out what’s causing it. This helps me see things more clearly and find the best way to deal with them, whether it’s with work or other challenges I face. This careful process helps me find simpler solutions and move forward.

Also after completing projects, I often feel overwhelmed, so I turn to travel to clear my mind. It helps me reset by exploring new places and leaving behind work worries. Whether I’m walking in busy cities or enjoying nature, travel lets me unwind, think, and come back refreshed for whatever’s next.
