We were lucky to catch up with Isaac Hess recently and have shared our conversation below.
Isaac, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I believe I got my resilience from my mother. Growing up, she always did everything she could to provide the best childhood she could for us and was always positive and always moving forward through many challenges she faced.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have always had baseball as a foundational cornerstone of my life. I played for 7+ years professionally and that led me into coaching. I am now the founder and owner of CageList.com and I am also the pitching coach for The Party Animals. Since I was in high school I knew that I wanted to be my own boss and I was intrigued by the concept and allure of being an entrepreneur.
When I finished my professional playing career I went into coaching high school baseball. During that time I began my entrepreneurial journey by starting to give private baseball lessons on the side while also learning about the internet, how it works and how I would be able to use it to my advantage to ultimately be my own boss,
I discovered that I loved the role of being a private baseball coach very much as I loved the feedback I would receive from clients and I could see the impact I was making on so many kids lives.
I eventually realized there was a big need for more accessible baseball training facilities and I knew there were a lot of people who owned backyard batting cages. From there, CageList.com was born as the first and only marketplace that enables private batting cage owners to list their batting cage on our website to make money renting it out to other local players and teams. The concept is similar to AirBNB or Peerspace.
Since CageList’s birth in 2020, CageList has seen significant growth and we now have batting cages listings in over 25 of the 50 United States and growing every day. We offer diehard baseball and softball families an easy opportunity to make money for their families, and we have continued to improve our product with new features month by month. Soon, we plan to release a native app as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills I believe are most impactful to a successful journey are the following:
1. Gratitude and how your frame your mindset. Whatever is happening in your life you must always connect to and understand that life is never happening to you, it is always happening FOR you. This simple mindset is not always simple, but it is the key to high vibrational living.
2. How you treat people. No matter what you do in your life, your relationships are the most important thing you will ever have. How you manage yourself and how you treat those around you in all facets of life whether it is business or personal relationships, will always be the main driver (or hinderance) of your success.
3. Every day progress or “moving the needle.” Whatever is happening in your business, you need to be making some form of progress every day. Some days you will make more progress than others, but you must be moving forward no matter what. If you are standing still your business is dying.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My wife. Since I met her she always said I was a business man. Her belief in me has helped me to make many decisions I have made regarding my businesses and move forward boldly towards accomplishing what I have set out to accomplish. I am forever grateful for her impact and her grace.
