We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sophie Gragg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sophie below.
Hi Sophie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my mom. She has always prioritized her career while striking a perfect balance between working hard and playing hard. As a therapist with her own private practice, she has always been her own boss, demonstrating incredible dedication and resilience. Her example has instilled in me an “I can do anything” mindset, showing me the importance of perseverance, discipline, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Watching her navigate her professional and personal life with such grace and determination has been a constant source of inspiration for me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
The Luna Collective is dedicated to curating and celebrating the best of emerging talent in music, art, and culture. As the founder and editor-in-chief, my role involves overseeing the creation of our print editorials, digital content, and events that bring our vibrant community together.
One of the most exciting aspects of what we do is our commitment to showcasing diverse voices and unique perspectives. Each issue of our magazine is a labor of love, featuring interviews, film photography, and even work from our readers. We are currently working on our 23rd print editorial issue, which I am really excited about.
In addition to our digital content and print publication, we continue to host live events and shows. We have 2 shows coming up in New York that will be a good time. These events are an incredible opportunity for our community to connect in person, celebrate creativity, and support emerging artists.
What sets The Luna Collective apart is our unwavering dedication to fostering a sense of community and collaboration. We believe in the power of creativity to inspire and unite people, and we are constantly striving to create spaces where artists can thrive and audiences can discover new, exciting talent.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Time Management: Balancing multiple projects, deadlines, and responsibilities is crucial. Effective time management has allowed me to juggle the various aspects of running a magazine and organizing events without feeling overwhelmed. My advice for those starting out is to develop strong organizational skills and use tools like calendars, planners, and project management apps to stay on top of tasks and deadlines. I personally recommend ClickUp.
2. Taste/Curating: Having a good sense of taste and the ability to curate content is essential for creating a compelling and cohesive publication. This skill involves recognizing quality and relevance in music, art, and writing, and knowing how to present it in a way that resonates with your audience. To develop this, immerse yourself in diverse forms of art and culture, and continuously refine your aesthetic sense by seeking out new and inspiring work. Consume the art you love!
3. Ambition and Big Picture Thinking: Keeping the big picture in mind has driven my ambition and helped me navigate the challenges of building The Luna Collective. It’s important to set long-term goals and stay focused on your vision, even when faced with setbacks. My advice is to always dream big, stay motivated, and remember why you started your journey in the first place. Cultivate a resilient mindset and keep pushing forward.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I always remind myself of the phrase, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” This mindset helps me break down large, daunting tasks into manageable steps.
start by writing down everything I need to get done. This helps clear my mind and gives me a visual overview of my tasks. I then rank these tasks by priority and the time they will take. This way, I can focus on what’s most important and time-sensitive first.
To maintain momentum and avoid burnout, I switch between tackling bigger, more daunting tasks and smaller ones that I can easily check off my list. This approach keeps me productive and gives me a sense of accomplishment as I steadily work through my to-do list.
My advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed is to break down your tasks, prioritize them, and find a balance between challenging and manageable tasks. This strategy not only makes the workload feel more achievable but also helps maintain motivation and focus.
