Meet Sonya Hosey

We were lucky to catch up with Sonya Hosey recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sonya, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience came from someone telling me my I am vision was a good idea, not God’s. Interestingly, I almost allowed that controlling voice to question my God-ordained assignment.
Years later I sit among women clergy, women in leafership and women with Gods gift in the place and space I used to be. Questioning our being in God and how He manifests Himself at the right time. It’s time for women to stop listening to the sabotaging voices.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Our Story And Godly Vision.
Do you know how it feels when you’ve been called to serve others at the highest by God but find yourself feeling isolated, blocked by artificial hierarchies within faith-based leadership, and the stress of trying to juggle roles as a Black woman in the world?
That was the experience of founder and minister Sonya Hosey, who, after years of serving in her home church, founded by her grandmother, Hattie Mae Moore, in a small Texas town, found her health devastated by a rare autoimmune brain disorder that left her with limited daily functional skills that required her to depend on others care – spiritually, physically, socially, financially, and emotionally.

The years of stressfully juggling the roles as an obedient servant of God as a minister, wife, sister, granddaughter, daughter, mother, and community leader had taken their toll.
She lost her self-value.
Although physicians were able to begin to restore Minister Sonya’s health with medical treatments—it was only when she began to listen deeply to God’s guidance to heal holistically that she was able to restore her health to a level where she has been able to reduce medical treatment infusions by 50%.
This journey of her wellness enabled her to realize how many other women ministers were losing their self-identity, isolated, developing catastrophic chronic diseases, loss of hope, and suicidal thoughts.
She knew she had to do something to change what was happening.
Thus, Moore 4 Sisters Ministries’ Iron Sharpens Iron 4 My Sisters and She Speaks Wellness programs were born from a deep desire, commitment, and vision that no woman of God shall walk alone in serving our faith-based communities.
Each woman will be sharpened by each other and supported as surely. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:1

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Life itself is a journey, with no playbook. In 2011, I had a profound vision of future events. It was as if God had planted the idea of Moore 4 Sisters in my spirit many years ago. Despite being advised that this was a good idea but not necessarily a God idea, I held onto it steadfastly. I firmly believe that once a seed is planted, it will eventually come to harvest. I never gave up on my aspirations and purpose, and eventually, everything worked out for the greater good. The birth of Moore4sisters (legal name), Iron Sharpens Iron, stemmed from my own feelings of isolation, loneliness, and being misunderstood as a woman minister. I want to share this to inspire you to persevere and never give up on your purpose.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

My most significant impact within the last twelve months is to connect with lifelong connections and those who pour into the vision and my desire to pour into theirs, such as Kay Hutchison of Aiki Healing. She is the one who helped me and the vision for black women to manifest itself—bringing women to wellness and giving them a quality of life again. Twelve months in this sisterhood helped me realize that Moore’s 4 Sisters – She Speaks Wellness is making an impact. It’s essential to surround yourself with people who know your heartbeat.
