Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allison Callahan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Allison, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Growing up, I was always on the shy side. I was quiet and liked to blend in with the crowd. Never in a million years did I see myself starting a business that required me to put myself out there everyday. What really helped me start to develop a confidence in myself was fitness. It was in the gym that I grew stronger both mentally and physically. I was weak when I started but day by day, as I kept going, I got stronger. learned that I could overcome difficult challenges and push myself to the limit. My confidence started to grow and I started stepping out and doing other things I never would have done, like sing in front of a crowd or take a speaking opportunity. The more opportunities I took, the more my confidence grew. Sometimes I would mess up and look stupid, but I was able to learn from those times and keep going. When I finally decided to start my fitness business, putting myself out there on social media was scary, but I knew the more I did it the less scary it would become. That’s exactly what happened. The lesson I learned is to just go for something even if you’re not confident at first and keep going. Just like in fitness, the confidence will grow as you keep going.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an online fitness coach for busy moms who want to take care of their health but don’t know where to start. I am a mom myself and I started this business after learning how many moms like me were lost when it came to balancing the challenges of fitness and motherhood. Whether a mom has never worked out before or was an athlete, motherhood is a whole new season of life with new challenges. Staying or getting fit may require a new approach.
Often times people don’t fully understand what I do because they either have never worked with a coach or confuse me with a personal trainer. While I am a personal trainer, my role as a coach involves more. A personal trainer assesses their client and builds a fitness and nutrition routine for that client to reach their goals. However, I have learned that often times this is alone is not effective for moms who are either new to fitness or starting all over with a new approach in motherhood. it may work for someone who has already built a foundation of healthy habits and are simply changing up the specific parts of her diet or routine to fit her goals. however the mom just starting or starting new, must build a new foundation, and skipping that step will leave her confused and disappointed, as she will wonder why she is not able to maintain the new skills she are learning. This is why, as a fitness coach, I make it my mission to help moms build their fitness foundation. My goal is to get a mom who struggles with building consistent fitness routines, due to the new challenges of motherhood, to form life long habits that will help her reach her goals now, and in the future.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important skills are things I learned on my fitness journey that also apply to business.
1. Stay consistent. You won’t get results overnight. You have to put in the work everyday and stick with it for the long haul if you want to get results
2. Accept discomfort. It’s not comfortable learning new things or taking risks. Putting yourself out there and doing something hard will have some level of discomfort. Push past it and know that something good will come, even if it’s just a life lesson. 3. Learn from your mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up, take it as a learning opportunity to get better.
These three skills helped me grow in the gym and in life.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Atomic Habits by James Clear was a transformative book in my personal life and how I coach my clients. My biggest take away from the book was to focus more on the little things you do each day if you want to reach any kind of goal. We often look over the small choices we make each day and don’t realize the bigger impact those choices have when compounded together. You want to go from out of shape to fit? How does a fit person live? What daily choices are they making? What daily choices can you start with? Maybe it’s drinking one more glass of water each day or going for daily walks.
