We were lucky to catch up with Jamarius Leaphart recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamarius , so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I have a mindset of “God chose me.” As a young kid, I always saw so many talented people around me, but none of them had the lives I wanted for myself. I would watch those reality shows where people had money, big houses, and were really into their careers. And I knew that was what I wanted for my life. I remember being about 7 or 8, maybe younger than that, and I was infatuated with people like Tyler Perry and Eddie Murphy. Those two men were black, very respected, and had MONEY! I wanted that life, so I started studying them. I remember Tyler Perry saying something about “having to do things you may not feel good with or it may seem scary at first, but if you want something you never had, you really gotta take a risk.” And that resonated with me because I truly understood it. I am a southern boy from South Carolina, from a small town called Batesburg. I moved to California to pursue my dreams in entertainment. I was so happy about what I thought was going to be me just living the dream, but I had to fight through some tough times! I had to shed my old life and mindset, I had to unlearn and learn, I failed, I won, I grew—all of that in a span of 8-9 months. And that is what really made me understand and LOVE the risk. If you take a risk and you fail, trust that the you you are looking for will catch you.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a artist. I create art. With that being said, I am working on a full project. Dare I say album… This is a risk… simply because I am an independent artist. And this album is a album that I am being as creative as I can. This album has a little Rock, country, gospel, pop, hip-hop and R&B. I grew up with all types of music playing. My grandmother loved gospel, My mom loved hip-hop and R&B.. My cousins loved Pop music… My grandfather loved rock and country. So I just took all of those genres in and loved them. So this album will resemble that a little. I also have three books out now.. I just want to focus on the music right now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first thing I’d say is to love yourself in every part of the journey. Celebrate yourself when you are winning and love on yourself when you are in the tough seasons. You are your biggest supporter. Nobody what other people say, what does your heart say… what are you feeling? honor yourself by trusting the vision God gave to YOU!.
Another thing I’d say is to be okay with growing. You will outgrow some family, friends and even some places, but that’s okay! You embrace it. don’t let anyone make you feel bad for growing. You deserve to see how great you can be in this life. and you deserve to love yourself , to think bigger, to dream bigger and to create more.
Thirdly, be okay with being YOU! Nobody can do what you do, nobody can think of create the way that you do. and wherever God has placed you in the earth, you embrace it and OWN IT!

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I’m struggling with bracing myself. I sometimes get so caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget to celebrate the wins. To take a break and recharge so that I can create even better and with more impact.
