Meet Kimberly Davis

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kimberly , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I am always looking to try new makeup looks that I’ve never done before. I try to think of looks I haven’t done before and I research the real pictures and watch YouTube videos as well to get inspiration to create my looks. I love pushing myself further than my last makeup look.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been doing beauty makeup for years and one day, I talked to a friend in Atlanta and he told me he has seen a lot of my makeup work and I should think about doing makeup for film projects. I started to research how to get started on film projects. I looked up makeup artists, joined Facebook film groups and started posting and introducing myself. I got a call to do makeup for my first film project in Columbia, SC they wanted to also teach me how to do special effects makeup. I started to learn a few things about special effects makeup and I started getting calls for projects in Georgia, NC, SC and Texas. I worked on short films, features, commercials, music videos and photoshoots. I really enjoy working on photo shoots and film projects being creative, meeting new people. I hope to be doing this a long time, this is definitely a dream come true. I’ve been able to work with some amazing people that I never thought I’d meet like Deon Richmond, Mo’Nique, Charnele Brown, Robert Lasardo, Rod Wave and ESG, Butch Patrick and Kathy Garver, and Jennifer Freeman to name a few.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I started out not knowing at all how to get started in the film industry, luckily I met an amazing makeup artist that was there for me to answer any questions I had. I definitely have come a long way on my makeup skills over the years, I’m always trying to improve my skills. Get your name out there as much as you can, join fb film groups and post about yourself weekly and what you do. Follow up with people you know in the film industry to see if they know of any projects coming up.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I recently had the opportunity to work with 2 other sfx makeup artists on set and it was such a great time. I’m looking forward to working on more sets like this where several makeup artists are needed. I love doing high fashion photo shoots as well so any photographers that are interested can send me a email [email protected]
