Meet Kisha Poole

We were lucky to catch up with Kisha Poole recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kisha, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Throughout my journey, I have developed a profound sense of confidence. As a Black woman in corporate America, I have had to work ten times harder than my white counterparts to prove my worth. This relentless effort has built a resilience in me that few can understand. I am a survivor of domestic violence, rape, and divorce, and I have survived two strokes. Each of these experiences has shaped me, reinforcing my strength and tenacity.

In many situations, I have been counted out and misunderstood. Yet, instead of letting these adversities break me, I have used them to fuel my determination. I have learned that everyone has a story, and I choose not to judge others, understanding that we all face our own battles.

I hold my head up high, drawing strength from my faith in God. My faith has been my anchor, guiding me through the darkest times and reminding me of my worth. This unwavering belief in myself and in a higher power has cultivated a deep-rooted confidence that propels me forward. My story is one of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering faith, and it is this story that empowers me every day.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a dynamic and accomplished professional with a few decades of experience in the retail industry. Throughout my career, I have excelled as a merchant, buyer, leader, and senior account executive. My journey in retail has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to hone my skills and develop a deep understanding of the industry.

In addition to my extensive career in retail, I am also a best-selling author of six novels, known for my captivating series, “The Dirty Divorce.” Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I am proud to have reached so many readers with my work under pen name Miss KP.

My talents extend beyond writing and retail; I am also a stylist and entrepreneur. I own and operate a kids’ boutique called Luxury Guilt, where I bring my keen eye for fashion and business acumen to create a unique shopping experience for children. My multifaceted career and unwavering determination have driven my success and allowed me to make a meaningful impact in both the literary and retail worlds.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three great qualities that have helped me on my journey in retail and as an author are resilience, creativity, and leadership.

1. Resilience: My ability to overcome challenges and setbacks has been crucial in both my retail career and my writing endeavors. Whether facing tough market conditions or personal adversities, my resilience has kept me moving forward and achieving my goals.
2. Creativity: In retail, my creativity has enabled me to identify trends, curate appealing product selections, and create an engaging shopping experience. As an author, this same creativity allows me to craft compelling stories that resonate with readers and stand out in a crowded market.
3. Leadership: My leadership skills have been instrumental in guiding teams, making strategic decisions, and driving success in my various roles. This quality has also translated into my writing career, where I have led promotional efforts, engaged with my audience, and managed the business aspects of being a best-selling author.
To help someone develop resilience, creativity, and leadership skills, I would offer the following advice:

1. Resilience:
• Embrace Challenges: View obstacles as opportunities to grow. Every setback is a chance to learn and improve.
• Build a Support System: Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, and mentors who can provide encouragement and advice during tough times.
• Practice Self-Care: Take care of your physical and mental health to maintain the strength needed to face challenges head-on.
2. Creativity:
• Stay Curious: Always be willing to learn and explore new ideas. Read widely, travel, and expose yourself to different cultures and perspectives.
• Take Risks: Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they might fail. Innovation often comes from experimentation and stepping out of your comfort zone.
• Collaborate: Work with others to gain new insights and inspiration. Collaborative efforts can spark creativity and lead to unexpected breakthroughs.
3. Leadership:
• Lead by Example: Demonstrate the behavior and work ethic you expect from others. Be a role model in your actions and decisions.
• Communicate Effectively: Develop strong communication skills to clearly convey your vision, expectations, and feedback. Listen actively to others and value their input.
• Empower Others: Encourage and support the growth and development of those around you. A good leader lifts others up and helps them reach their full potential.

By focusing on these strategies, individuals can cultivate resilience, creativity, and leadership, which are essential for success in any field.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Over the past year, I have grown and improved significantly by prioritizing self-care and ensuring I am on my to-do list. By dedicating time to activities that nurture my well-being, such as regular massages and tending to my spiritual health, I have found a deeper sense of peace and balance. Additionally, I have become more selective about who I allow into my space, surrounding myself only with those who uplift and support me. This combination of self-care and mindful relationships has profoundly impacted my personal growth, helping me to thrive in both my personal and professional life.
