Meet Royal Fools

We recently connected with Royal Fools and have shared our conversation below.

Royal Fools, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
The main way we keep our creativity alive is by jumping around from task to task. Being independent, there is always a lot to do. If we’re struggling to write a song, maybe we’ll design flyers, practice an instrument, or film a TikTok. By the time we’re finished with one thing we’re excited about doing another!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We’re Royal Fools, an alternative rock band from Boston making lyrical, screamable music. First thing you’d notice if you saw us on the street is that we look pretty similar, this tracks, we’re identical twins. We moved to LA together for college and have been tearing up basements and backyards ever since. So far we’ve released two singles and word is we’ve got an EP coming up!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The one quality that holds Royal Fools together is always going to be the bond we have. Being twins we’ve grown up together, so we’ve had each other’s backs through absolutely everything. Royal Fools is the two of us, the way we see the world and the way we interact with it. Obviously, we lucked out because we’ve known our other bandmate for our whole lives, but as we’re getting older, seeing the kinds of falling outs other bands can have, our bond there underneath the music is so important. Another trait we value is our sense of humor. We take everything light, we can roll with the punches. Sometimes you’ll play shows and the audience won’t get the sing along part, or you’ll drop the microphone, or trip. Being able to laugh it off not only helps us in the moment but it also helps us make content. Making fun of ourselves is fun and it’s real, and people really love to see it.
Our last important trait is our drive. We’ve always been little guys with big dreams, pushing way too hard to try to go inconceivably far. With each of us having insane ambition and worth ethic, we get to hold each other responsible. Our drive combined with our bond means one of us won’t slack off because we’re not gonna let the other one fail at achieving his dreams.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
It is so incredibly easy to get overwhelmed with how face paced this industry gets. Sometimes it’s really important to just slow down and remind yourself why you love it. Like play your instrument for fun, pull up the tabs for some cover, listen to old songs you’ve made, watch back concert clips. It gets so cluttered in your head sometimes and being able to just breathe and remind yourself what a dream it is that you get to make your art is such a lovely thing.
