Meet Erica Moore-Burton, Esq.

We were lucky to catch up with Erica Moore-Burton, Esq. recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Thanks for having me again. Where do I get my work ethic from, that’s such a great question and is layered for me. I grew up around hard working members of my family and it was always a conversation at home and around the dinner table.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’ve immersed myself in the dynamic world of legal recruitment for nearly two decades here in the heart of Los Angeles, California. As the proud President and Founder of Round Hill Legal Search, we’re gearing up to celebrate our 10th year of successfully connecting legal talent with opportunities.

At Round Hill Legal Search, we’re not just a legal search firm – we’re facilitators of career journeys. Working hand-in-hand with law firms and corporate legal departments, we specialize in uncovering the brightest legal minds, whether they be seasoned attorneys, dedicated paralegals, or crucial support staff. The excitement of our work lies in the daily impact we have on people’s lives, bridging the gap between exceptional candidates and clients, ranging from AMLaw 100 firms to small solo offices.

What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to making matches that are a win for everyone involved. Our dedicated team, fueled by a shared passion for helping others, forms the backbone of our success. Every day, we’re not just running a business; we’re creating synergies that empower both candidates and clients alike.

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of Round Hill Growth Partners – a new chapter in our journey. This division, our coaching arm, is set to focus on group coaching for associates and leadership coaching for legal professionals navigating career plateaus. The programs are designed to foster awareness and guide professionals through self-assessments, paving the way for personal and professional growth in areas such as leadership, business development, and career transitions.

Personally, I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of our new podcast in 2024, “Lighting The Legal Career Path.” This initiative is deeply meaningful to me as it provides a platform to spotlight the journeys of women and BIPOC attorneys. Through candid conversations, we aim to share stories, insights, and gems of wisdom that will not only resonate with our audience but also impact the next generation of attorneys and those aspiring to elevate their careers.

In essence, Round Hill Legal Search isn’t just a business venture – it’s a culmination of passion, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the legal community. As we continue to evolve and expand our offerings, I’m excited about the opportunities to shape the narratives of legal careers and inspire others on their professional journeys.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey to date, I’ve come to realize that three qualities have been instrumental in my success: a commitment to continuous learning, the courage to embrace discomfort, and an unwavering work ethic.

For those just starting out, here’s my advice on how to develop these essential qualities:

1. Continuous Learning and maintaining a Growth Mindset: Make learning a daily habit. Seek out new knowledge, skills, and perspectives. Stay curious and open-minded, and actively seek feedback for growth opportunities. Whether through formal education, mentorship, or self-directed learning, prioritize personal and professional growth every day.

2. Courage and Embracing Discomfort: Understand that growth often requires stepping outside your comfort zone. Embrace discomfort as a sign of progress. Challenge yourself to take calculated risks and pursue opportunities that push you to grow, even if they seem daunting at first. Learn from setbacks, and view failures as valuable learning experiences that propel you forward. I have a little post-it on my desk that has a note on it that states “Step out of your comfort zone”. Even at this stage in my career and life there are uncomfortable decisions and actions that I need to make and take. I still need to be reminded.

3. Work Ethic and Dedication: Cultivate a reputation for excellence through consistent dedication and hard work. Set high standards for yourself and demonstrate reliability, integrity, and professionalism in everything you do. Be willing to put in the time and effort necessary to achieve your goals. Approach each task with purpose and determination, knowing that your work ethic is a reflection of your commitment to success.

Incorporating these qualities into your daily routine will not only enhance your professional growth but also pave the way for long-term success and fulfillment. Stay disciplined, stay focused, and never lose sight of the value that continuous learning, courage, and hard work bring to your journey.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
One of the most powerful things my parents did for me was to truly instill the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to in this world. They never imposed limits on me or my siblings, which I believe played a significant role in our success. Education was always emphasized, as they believed it was something no one could ever take away once acquired. They encouraged us to pursue our dreams relentlessly. My parents never once told me I couldn’t do something; they made it clear that everything was possible and within reach.

They were incredible mentors on human behavior, often discussing the ‘labels’ society tries to attach based on race, gender, and other factors. Their message was clear: don’t let anyone else define who you are; create your own identity. They always encouraged me to create my own box, despite the box that society would want to put you in. I’m passing on that same message to my children because it remains just as relevant today.

My parents always encouraged me to be confident, leading by example. They were both hardworking professionals, always striving for excellence and pursuing their goals. We were continually exposed to diverse experiences, people, and places, which I believe greatly contributed to my confidence in finding my path in life.
