We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Guajardo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Hi Jennifer, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Whenever I need to do something new and unfamiliar, I tell myself, “The worst that can happen is, they say, ‘No.’ I am not going to melt like the witch in ‘The Wizard of Oz’, I am going to be alright.”
But I will never know and always wonder if I didn’t go for it and ask!
So, breathe, send that email, letter, or make that call. Because life’s too short and we gotta make it count! Don’t let your negative thoughts bring you down. And enjoy life!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! I’m Jennifer, the Texas-based artist known as the “Black Light Art Queen”, specializing in vibrant neon UV light reactive paintings. I create mesmerizing, otherworldly art that comes alive under blacklight. My work combines vivid colors and intricate designs to transport viewers to a neon dreamscape.
My pieces evoke wonder and curiosity, transforming any space into an electrifying visual journey.
Would you like to explore a neon universe through my paintings?
When the blacklights go on the color that looks black really isn’t… it’s purple! Whether I am making deep and thick or hairline thin strokes, the only color I use is dark purple in my fluorescent paintings. Even the white I paint with changes from its natural color to purple.
I support reforestation by partnering with ‘One Tree Planted.’ When you purchase an original painting, art print, or merch from my website or art shows, we plant trees where needed most!
I create art that’s accessible to the public while also offering high-end luxury pieces by providing quality art prints in various sizes and original pieces made with archival-quality supplies.
I have been in 3 Black Light Art Shows in the past three years among other events unrelated to blacklight and am looking to expand my reach beyond Houston, Texas. Looking for a venue to hold a solo exhibit for a day glo and blacklight art experience and eventually open my gallery not just for my art but for emerging artists and youth groups can come and enjoy the immersive experience that blacklights give.
Recently in a group blacklight show for my 3rd year in a row, at Hardy & Nance Studios on June 7, 2024, curated by Chris from Insomnia Gallery. I will be in the Pretty Darn Small A tiny art, art show on July 20, 2024.
My website has expanded to include merch and exclusive prints, such as glow-in-the-dark jewelry, glow-in-the-dark art prints, hand-embellished signed canvas prints, holographic prints, and stickers. No slowing down on the continued growth of new and innovative art ideas for my art merch!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My art takes you on an intense journey of detail and abstraction harmonizing in a beautiful dance between a ballet dancer and hip-hopper, in bold colors that mesmerize your eyes with their exuberant and delicate strokes under blacklights and daylight.
Exploring is a key component of any journey. Practicing new brushwork for various textures and strokes. Layering paint lightly to build depth and luminosity. Capturing certain details can guide the viewer’s eye and convey an emotion.
Paint is forgiving so we should be too on ourselves! Study and explore with paints, techniques, surfaces, and tools. Remember you will always be growing through self-reflection. As you evolve, so will your art.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, for an art show that needs a certain amount of art pieces or merchandise to sell, I make a list of things I need to do put a line or box in front of them, and go down the list one by one. When I have what is in front of me on paper I can see them getting checked off in real time. This gives me the momentum to finish. Usually, the list is between 3-5 goals for the day in order of importance. I also make weekly, monthly, and yearly lists the same way. I even do this for supplies I need, want, and have to buy immediately.
This all seems simple enough to do. But some people won’t do it. It makes a big impact on your thought process. Seeing everything in black and white can be daunting. But that’s why starting with 3-5 for the day can fuel your desire to do it again the next day.
