We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Walter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Nicole with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I envision my work ethic as a blend of nature and nurture. As an only child and Virgo sun, I was born into the archetype of hard-working, conscientious, and dutiful—I actually wouldn’t mind being more spontaneous and free-spirited. In educational settings, I observe I take more time to grasp new concepts, so I often have to work more diligently and longer than those around me—I can feel like I’m the last one to grasp a concept. Thankfully, I’m stubborn enough to keep forging ahead, and it has honed my work ethic.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am devoted to educating others on how to be mindful and present using techniques that not only improved my life but that also contain a rich lineage and are researched and studied. Yin Yoga and Reiki, along with their counterparts of breathwork and meditation, encourage me, my clients, and students to be not only more mindful but also more body-full and aware of our nervous system responses and emotional states.
I transitioned from teaching weekly yoga classes to specializing in workshops, trainings, and retreats focused on Yin and Reiki. This scope allows me to reach students and attendees on a personal level in an extended sacred container of support and education.
I’m beyond excited to share Yin & Restorative Yoga with Reiki during a week-long retreat this October 12-19 at the eco-friendly Xinalani resort in Puerto Vallarta.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things kept me afloat during an often tumultuous journey: curiosity; grit; consistency. I continually embrace a beginner’s mind, constantly asking questions and seeking knowledge. I have had a laughable amount of setbacks. But instead of getting permanently discouraged, I viewed them as learning opportunities. I figured out what went wrong and kept moving forward. This determination is key to making any long-term progress. Consistency is HUGE. Big breakthroughs are amazing, but it’s the daily practices that truly compound. I focused on showing up consistently and putting in the effort, even when it wasn’t glamorous. Over time, the small steps added up to significant progress.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I would love to say I’m not overwhelmed, but I am—often! I have two sons under 10, run a small business, and am a teacher. Friends often get wide-eyed at my schedule. Daily, I take one major task for my business. Honoring it removes a mental burden and frees up space to focus on the rest or let them go to the next day. This helps me feel like I’m progressing. I also use the techniques of Reiki and Yin Yoga—like relaxation and attention-training—to remove overwhelm and be in the present moment. This could be a brief breath practice, placing my hands somewhere soothing on my body, or identifying my feelings and needs. Even tiny steps, taken consistently, make a big difference in managing overwhelm.
