We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate Roberts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Building confidence in the beauty industry definitely took time. Looking the part by having my hair, makeup and nails done, and wearing a stylish outfit definitely helps. But it wasn’t until I really narrowed down my services to what I really enjoyed doing and honed in on those skills that I gained the confidence and self esteem that I needed to succeed. The more I performed these services and the more specialized classes I took, the better I got. The knowledge, experience, and expertise I gained gives me all the confidence I need when I’m working on my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been a hairstylist for over 20 years. I started cosmetology school while I was a sophomore in high school. I grew up in Pittsburgh but have resided in Dallas now for the past 10 years. Doing hair has always been a passion of mine ever since I can remember. I specialize in women’s cuts and color on medium to long hair. Highlights and root touch ups make up the majority of my color services while blunt textured and layered cuts make up the majority of my haircut requests. My blondes love my “lived in” techniques which can prolong their time between appointments and my root touch ups love that I can get them in and out of the salon in less than 90 minutes,
During the pandemic I made the best choice for my career and started working for myself. That’s when Kate Roberts Hair Studio began. I moved into my own private suite and couldn’t be happier. I’m a wife and a mother to two beautiful little girls, Harper (8) and Harlow (4). Creating my own schedule has allowed me to be present for my family and no longer miss out on important things. I have a wonderful clientele that supported me through this transition and has continued to support me and help my business flourish over the years.
I look forward to growing more in my career, expanding my knowledge, and working with even more clients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As with everything, knowledge is power. The more knowledgeable you are the further you will go and the more people will trust you. The best things I did and my advice to others starting out in this industry is to find a salon or a mentor that will give you hands on experience and prepare you before going behind the chair, find your niche and excel in it, and stay up to date on the latest trends.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is kind, has a good sense of humor, easy to communicate with, has realistic hair expectations, trusts me, understands the importance of using quality professional products, pre books their appointments, refers friends and family, supports my business over Amazon or other big box stores, and always has a good show or movie to recommend. And if they happen to bring me a coffee, I wouldn’t mind that either. All in all, I feel very blessed to have a clientele that fits this description.
