Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marisol Rodriguez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marisol, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my parents, they play a huge part as to who I am as a person. They migrated here to the US when my sisters were 4, a couple years after that is when I came into the picture. As little kids we always think of different ways to be able to help our parents out in any way possible; at a young age I would wake up at 5am on the weekends to go out with my dad and make collect metal to sell and my part was to look for cans so I can make my small portion for the day, those are my most favorite memories of my childhood being able to spend that time with my dad bonding and helping him. As I grew older I would start going to my dad’s job to help him out on the weekends, he works in HVAC I would do small things like put the glue paste on the items he would be needing or pass him the tools he needed, I then reached my teen years and got multiple jobs I was working at Blackjack, Harkins Theatres and at a Public Library. I felt very proud of myself because now I was able to buy my own stuff and help out at home, I started becoming more independent as I got older and eventually went from multiple jobs to one single job once I finished college, however that didn’t last long. I was pregnant with my son and took time off work and decided to start my own small business which started of with chocolate covered strawberries and it took off soon after that and ever since my business has been growing. I have been able to offer items that I never thought I would be able to do from sweet treats to custom apparel, flower bouquets to now even opening a party rental supply business, but this business I opened it for my children to be able to have a little piece of their future growing with them. My children will always be my motivation because I know they always look up to their parents the way I did and what better way than to show an example and have them learn and grow in their own way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a kid at heart when it comes to making sweet treats; I just love making them my ultimate favorite is the Chocoflan, everytime I think about it I can taste the creamy flan and the chocolate cake at the bottom; that is the ultimate combination for me. I love making sweets, I have the biggest sweet tooth and love sharing my treats with customers and family, I know they love them every single time. I always love to hear when I have new clients and they were referred by current clients, it makes me know I am doing something right. I just love seeing peoples reaction when they get their treats especially when they get their candied fruit, this has been a new item on my menu for a couple of month and boy this has been a big hit, I even had a client come from 45 minutes away just to try MY candied fruit, I felt so special and cool.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Self promotion, communication, and bravery. Those are the top qualities that were most impactful on my journey, one of those a bit weird right?! Yeah, before I even started my business I was very quiet and would keep to myself a lot. However that had to change very quickly if I wanted to start my own business, because those are the top qualities you need to be able to run a successful business and if your scared of whats to come or the future well you wont go very far and how I like to say “Con el miedo no se hace nada” in other words if your afraid than its going to keep you from moving forward in life. You need to come out of your comfort zone to be able to achieve goals you never thought were possible or that you could do, we all need to start somewhere and believing in yourself is where it starts.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I have had some thoughts on collaborating with other business owners, but have never actually reached out to any. I would love to! I am always open to new opportunities, in all honesty I feel that I offer a variety of items in my business that really anyone that would want to collaborate with me could do so, I have always loved to learn a bit of everything and how I like to say ” I specialize in what my customer needs”. Feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram or my Facebook to come up with a plan and do a collaboration!
