Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kat Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kat , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I’m always able to persist in the face of adversity because of my mindset. I spent many years of my life people-pleasing so I always took it personally when people didn’t like me or agree with what I’m doing. But through life experiences, meditation, and reading I grasped the realization that anything someone does has nothing to do with me. So when a person chooses to be unkind or negative, it doesn’t speak to who I am as a person. It speaks to who they are. And remembering this can be a struggle at times but I’m always able to keep going because I know nobody ever hates on anybody. People can only project the hate they feel for themselves.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a writer and a positive content creator so I use my words to heal myself and help other people. I have always had a gift when it comes to words but I didn’t know how to translate that into something physical. I love to talk but hate the sound of my voice. Scared out of my mind, I still started a podcast with dreams of releasing my own book someday. While hosting my show I took classes and learned everything I could about how to become published. Finally last year I was brave enough to take the leap of putting out my first poetry book. I did it scared and because I did it helped me to gain enough confidence to put out another book this very year! Then a friend had the great idea that I should start performing my poetry at open mics to get my art out there. This made me face my other fear (public speaking) in a way that was so powerful I was given the opportunity to headline my very own poetry show this year. So there’s been a lot of firsts, a lot of frights, but most importantly so much fulfillment in building my own business. It’s nice to make money, but knowing I’m actually making a positive impact in this world is worth more than anything. I will be expanding my brand further this year so my website should be ready to launch soon. Until then I’m happily doing open mics, selling books, creating content and most importantly promoting positivity. The world needs it and so do I.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities I’ve learned along my journey are definitely humility, respect and commitment. I would say humility because every step of the way I’ve learned that the easiest people to work with are the most humble. And the easiest way to help other people is to be humble enough to relate to them. Humility is key. Respect is another important quality because you have to know what you can and cannot tolerate when it comes to your goals. A lot of people can knowingly and unknowingly violate your boundaries if you don’t establish what respect looks like to you. So in life and in business I’m very big on giving and receiving respect. Commitment is the last but maybe biggest quality to have because you have to keep going. It’s going to look like you’re getting nowhere sometimes or you may feel like giving up ( I know I did) but my commitment to myself and my goals is what gives me that push to get things done.
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to just take it one step at a time. Don’t take on too much but always be willing to learn. It’s okay to ask for help and be open to receiving. Using humility, respect and commitment will open so many doors in life if you know how to execute them the right way. You can do it!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking to connect with people who care about making a positive change in the world. I believe we all can help each other in some way if we stay open. I love working with people who take their craft seriously, know how to have fun, and who can respect the art.
