We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tales Ordakji a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tales, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For the incessant search for utopia for a better world through art. Through art, which is a powerful tool for transformation, it is possible to generate reflection and understanding about other points of view on the same subject, making human beings see the complexity of human relationships and the complexity of what it means to live in a society with all its rules, mistakes and successes.
Generating this reflection through my work is, in a nutshell, one of my life purposes. I believe that when people are aware of the entire context around them, being able to discern all social layers and their privileges, we can be able to not only reflect simply, but to think about solutions, both individual and collective, to transform our society into a better place.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I graduated in Performing Arts from the public theater school of Santos and through various courses and workshops in the State of São Paulo, in Brazil. I also have training in WebDesigner and Management Processes from Fundação Getúlio Vargas, which I joined to delve even deeper into the production of cultural projects. I am currently a Project Management MBA student at USP/Esalq and I work as executive producer of the multicultural space Casa UmMeiaZero. In parallel, I am part of the coordination of MABS – Movimento Audiovisual da Baixada Santista, where I was recently elected to represent the audiovisual segment of Santos/SP at the 4th CNC – National Culture Conference. of the State of São Paulo.
During my artistic journey, in 2016, I had the pleasure of being selected for a main role in the feature film “Sócrates”, directed by Alexandre Moratto. With him, I learned specific interpretation, script construction and editing techniques, following the project from its beginning to its launch. The film traveled to several festivals around the world and won several awards, including a Spirit Award, considered the Oscar of Independent Cinema. In 2020, I was awarded the Someone to Watch (revelation) award at a Portuguese award for this work.
In the field of cultural production, I acquired theoretical training in several courses, learning from highly successful Brazilian experts, and in a practical way, organizing artistic-cultural and collective events in the Baixada Santista region.
Together with filmmaker Cibele Gonçalves, I founded the independent production company Atado no Ato, where I work in various roles on more than 10 internationally award-winning short films. I also work on producing and preparing video classes for the sector, in addition to developing arguments, organizing film shows and market events, among others.
Still within the scope of acting, in 2020 I made my television debut with the 4th season of the series Rotas do Ódio, which is available on Universal TVBR and Globoplay. Currently, I am part of the main cast of Anna Muylaert’s new film, the feature film The Business Women’s Club. In this project, I had the opportunity to act and work with big names in Brazilian cinema, which I have followed and admired since my childhood. The premiere is scheduled for this year (2024), with distribution by Globo Filmes.
Recently, I just finished recording a series for TV Cultura for the Department of Education of the city of Santos, something very different from what I’ve done before, it will be a super fun, light project and I will have the opportunity to act for a children’s audience. Furthermore, I am waiting for the response to some feature film tests and in parallel I am working on original projects, such as a short documentary film of the performance that I will present in public spaces in Santos in April, a 16-episode culinary series that I will have pleasure of working on the direction, a short film also written by me that will also be shot in the city of Santos in mid-July, in addition to other artistic projects that will be completed in the long term but pre-production will begin in the coming months. It’s a lot and I’m very happy to be able to carry out so many projects after such a turbulent period that our sector experienced during the pandemic. It really is a miracle and a gift to be able to work, and even more so to be able to work with what you really have passion and vocation for.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Without a doubt: Diligence, resilience and planning.
Believing in yourself, in your abilities and seeing yourself in the place you want is essential so that, step by step, you can walk towards the success you desire. Life may have crooked, cloudy and nebulous paths, but I believe that all things have their determined time, everything is in God’s time, and of course, it is also up to us to work in the best way possible until that time arrives. A faith without action is a dead faith.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I always look for people who can add to my work and, of course, to my life purpose through artistic work.
But for this to happen it is essential that the person is an honest person, treats others with respect and is a friend of good.
Unfortunately, there are many people who have a sense of immediacy and who do not see the value of daily work, where step by step, in their own time, we can make our way to the finish line. It seems to me that people want shortcuts, but it’s not always possible. There are days, there are projects, there are situations that ask us to work little by little with greater strategic planning, with the resilience to face the days to achieve, in the long term, the realization of our biggest dreams.
