We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Francesca Escarraga a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Francesca, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always known at a young age that I wanted to become an artist and work in the entertainment industry. I grew up watching a wide array of films – from Hollywood classics to animated films to international films, all of which have profoundly shaped the way I see myself and the world. I found solace in storytelling and the characters who became my companions as I navigated the labyrinth of life. I was extremely fortunate and privileged to have the unwavering support of my family who has constantly encouraged me to pursue my dreams and what I love to do in life. They have equipped me with the necessary tools to help me become the artist and person I’ve always wanted to be.
I live and breathe writing. I feel most at peace and my authentic self when I’m immersed in the world of storytelling whether it’s writing a screenplay, article, short story or a journal entry. The moment I realized that being a writer is my life’s purpose was when the first story I wrote for a renowned New York-based publication about my life journey was published. I received hundreds of positive feedback and messages from strangers from all over the world telling me how it inspired them to leave their comfort zone and pursue their dreams after reading my story. Being able to inspire and empower people to become the best version of themselves through the power of art and storytelling has been the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my professional and personal life. I made it my life’s mission to give people a voice and use my platform to tell stories that induce positive change in society.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been a writer and producer in the entertainment industry for almost six years now, and I am ecstatic to share that I just recently wrapped my new film entitled And We’ll Be Okay, which I had the privilege of writing and directing for the first time. I loved every aspect of the creative process and being able to work with the most remarkable cast and crew in the industry. The stories I typically write and produce often include a social impact element and delve into themes such as cultural identities, mental health, relationships, individuality, and the concept of home. The most exciting part of what I do is that I get to be creative every day and bring to life stories that leave a positive impact on people’s lives.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First of all, always show up – for yourself and others. This is the most important guiding principle that has made all the difference in my professional and personal life. Showing up not only puts you in a room full of opportunities but also shows your work ethic as well as how much you respect and value people.
Additionally, be an excellent communicator. You need to be able to speak up, effectively communicate your ideas, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life.
Lastly, be proactive. This means thinking ahead, having a solution-oriented mindset, finding ways to be helpful in order to get the best possible outcome, and going above and beyond the call of duty to support your team.
If there’s one quality you must possess for the rest of your life, it must undoubtedly be kindness. People will always remember how you made them feel and it doesn’t matter how accomplished you are in your career if at the core of your being, you’re an unpleasant person to work with. So, always be kind to everyone you cross paths with.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book that has forever transformed my life is entitled The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s a story about pursuing your dreams and finding your life’s purpose no matter how difficult the journey may seem. It has impacted my life in unimaginable ways especially when I was going through a quarter-life crisis. The story immensely inspired and propelled me to quit my corporate job and pursue my life-long dream of becoming a writer in Hollywood. It gave me the courage to leave my comfort zone and take a leap of faith into the unknown.
A particular quote that has left an imprint on my heart is “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” This encapsulates the essence of life providing you all the necessary knowledge and tools to help you achieve your dreams as long as you put your mind, heart, and soul in everything you do. If you put in the work and have the right intentions, there’s no need to control or worry about the future because the universe will take note and will do everything in its power to make your paths straight.
