We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Makaylan Mendoza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Makaylan below.
Makaylan, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
For self-care, I disconnect and withdraw from my busy tasks to take a breather. Managing a brand and setting up different operating systems can become overstimulating, so I take a day or two to rest, catch up on a TV series, and stay in my word. This practice has significantly improved my effectiveness by allowing me to recharge and return to my work with renewed focus and energy.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
There are many exciting developments ahead for NalyTheBrand LLC! (hint hint: a sister company) NTB focuses on selling raw hair out of the Atlanta area, but it’s more than just a brand—it’s a community built on genuine love, support, and a commitment to serving others. Currently, we are undergoing a rebrand. Since I started in May 2023, I produced great work, but I was still searching for a deeper satisfaction. Now, I am taking my journey with Christ very seriously, dedicating this endeavor to God and using it as a creative outlet to honor and glorify Him above all else. This rebrand reflects my renewed focus and commitment, making NTB not just a business, but a mission-driven community with goals bigger than myself.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are innovation, discipline, and the ability to absorb and creatively apply information. All glory to God for these strengths.
For those early in their journey or returning after a hiatus, I highly recommend leveraging your community. Get yourself into rooms with people who have achieved what you aim for or possess valuable knowledge. Learning from others can provide invaluable insights and shift your perspective instantly. Don’t underestimate the wisdom and life lessons that can come from connecting with experienced individuals.
The worst thing you can do is believe you’re unteachable. Always be a student and literally NEVER stop learning!
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
Back in May 2023, I would have said to go it alone 100%. Now, I understand the importance of community and delegating tasks. While wearing multiple hats is inevitable for business owners, it can become overwhelming and hinder your ability to see the bigger picture. It’s crucial to recognize where you excel and seek help in areas where you lack.
For instance, I initially did my own graphics but later hired a designer for a more refined and timeless look. Similarly, I excelled at clerical tasks but needed help with analytics, so I worked with a brand manager, who provided valuable insights beyond likes and comments. Being well-rounded by learning and using multiple skills consistently, and seeking expertise where needed, has made a significant difference. This balance between focusing on strengths and improving weaknesses is essential for success.
