We recently connected with Selena Xin Jin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Selena Xin, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
One of the most effective strategies for me is visiting art galleries and museums. Immersing myself in the creativity of others can be incredibly inspiring. I love Los Angeles for its abundance of art galleries featuring diverse and innovative artworks. Each visit offers a fresh perspective and often sparks new ideas, helping me see my work from a different angle.
Music also plays a significant role in overcoming creative blocks. I switch my playlists to match the mood or theme of the project I’m working on. Music has a unique ability to evoke emotions and set the tone for my creative process, often leading to breakthroughs when I’m stuck.
In addition, I find that stepping away from my work and engaging in different creative activities can help break through blocks. For instance, I might switch from costume design to painting or sketching. This shift in focus allows me to explore different facets of my creativity and often helps me return to my primary project with a refreshed point of view.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Selena Xin Jin, a costume designer passionate about storytelling through visual art. Born in China and having lived in Canada, the UK, and the US, my diverse background deeply influences my creative vision. I specialize in creating costumes that bring characters and worlds to life across various genres, from sci-fi to period dramas. One of the most exciting aspects of my work is collaborating with talented directors and artists worldwide. This continuous learning and growth keep my designs fresh and inspired. In addition to costume design, I am also engaged in my art series “GALAXY RESEARCH LAB,” which explores themes of travel and discovery through painting. This series, born during the pandemic, has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Paris, and New York.
Recently, I completed costume design for the fantasy film “Bird Eyes View”, as well as a Sci-Fi film which is a collaboration with Sony Picture, “Europa” directed by Student Emmy winning Filmmaker Jacqueline Elyse Rosenthal. I am also preparing for a new exhibition of my “GALAXY RESEARCH LAB” fine art series in Los Angeles. My goal is to keep pushing the boundaries of costume design and exploring new artistic avenues, creating work that resonates with audiences and brings stories to life in visually stunning ways. Stay tuned for more exciting projects and exhibitions!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Technical Skills and Attention to Detail:
Mastering the technical aspects of costume design, such as sewing, fabric knowledge, and fitting, is essential. Attention to detail ensures that every costume piece enhances the character’s narrative and the overall visual language of the production. Taking time to learn and refine your technical skill is important.
2. Building up strong research skill:
Thorough research is critical for creating authentic and believable costumes, especially when working on period pieces or fantasy genres. It helps ensure accuracy and adds depth to the character and story. I suggest to develop strong research habits, and have a wide range of researches from many different sources.
3. Collaboration and Communication:
Working closely with directors, production designers, and other team members is vital for cohesive production. Effective communication and collaboration ensure that everyone’s vision aligns, creating a harmonious and visually stunning final image. My suggestion is to be open to feedback and willing to share your ideas.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Getting better with my problem-solving skills has been crucial, particularly in handling unexpected challenges on set or during the design process. I’ve become more adept at thinking on my feet and finding creative solutions. Also, taking time to reflect on my past projects has been a transformative practice. Analyzing what worked well and identifying areas for improvement has guided my growth as a costume designer.
Over the past year, I’ve also significantly expanded my professional network. Collaborating with new directors, designers, and industry professionals has opened doors to exciting projects and opportunities.
