Meet Brooklynn Hill

We were lucky to catch up with Brooklynn Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.

Brooklynn, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Being in a room where I am the only person that looks like me is kind of like an unspoken job. Needing to represent people who look like me is something that takes a special type of skill to adapt to under certain circumstances.

Needing to learn how to stay confident in a sea of people who possibly do not believe in you. As a Black and West Indian woman, I have to work hard to beat stereotypes within the workplace and my day-to-day life as well as being oversexualized and not taken seriously. I have to be the person who stands out and makes a difference in not only my work but also for the next generation of women in the media industry.

The way I have become and still am creating my success is the drive I have. I created my own lane and learned my lessons over time and I still am to this day. This is the most effective way that has worked for me is constantly evolving in my own skin, my work, and the environments I’m in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am an Atlanta-based photographer who has a unique approach to my work that celebrates creative and black liberation in different forms. Originally born in Minnesota and later moved to Georgia to attend Clark Atlanta University to major in film and to see what an HBCU could offer me. It has been an amazing experience so far and I would not trade it for anything. I am focused on breaking into the film industry and making a name for myself in more places than one. I get excited when my work comes out just like how I pictured it. It feels like I am on cloud 9 when the outcome of my work is recognized and appreciated especially among others than my peers. I am always looking for like-minded individuals to collaborate with and network with.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My determination, authenticity, and humble beginnings have impacted me in more ways than one. The advice I have for people is to be themselves. As cliche as that sounds you cannot fake anything in this world without the repercussions and those repercussions will be your wake-up call. That wake-up call could be work or even your academics. You just need to be yourself and not give up. I just know if I was not myself and if I did give up I definitely would not be as far as I am today and so I thank god for the challenges he has given me. I would not and anyone reading this would not be given something if they could not handle it.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I would say the infamous trials and tribulations of my 20s are getting to me. I am learning so much and applying those lessons but yet I have so many feelings of being defeated and feeling left out when in reality it is something everyone needs to go through.
