We were lucky to catch up with Joselyn Medina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joselyn, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I love this question. My generosity comes from my purpose. You see we are born with unique gifts/ talents and I’ve always believed they are meant to be shared with the world! My purpose became the vehicle for me to serve to my community. We have to be a blessing to receive blessings, so that thought alone keeps me going to go harder and never stop serving.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Joselyn, but many know me as Josie The Barber. I started my barbering journey back on 2018. What I love the most about barbering is really the freedom it brought to my life, being able to control how much or how little to work, and having control of my earnings. I’ve always known my life purpose, & barbering became the vehicle for me to be able to pursue it at my fullest potential. Within my barber studio I always aim to teach my clients everything they need to know about their hair, and give them confidence. It is a very rewarding feeling to hear my clients express how professional and caring I am on every service. The ultimate goal is always for my clients to leave feeling their best! Throughout the years I’ve paid attention and listened to clients concerns with their hair and skincare needs and after a few years of preparation myself in collaboration with artist Chris Voice created an Organic Black soap design to remove impurities and toxins from the skin, while giving the skin a natural glow. As well as we created a Multi Purpose Organic Rosewater mist that can be used as a face tonic, face refresher, scalp refresher, scalp cleanser with its natural cleansing, clarifying, and detoxifying properties provided by organic essential oils. Those two products have become our 2 biggest sellers with real fast results. We are continually working and listening to our customers to provide them with the best quality products.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
You are on a roll with the great questions. I would have to say looking back at 2020 as an example, during covid barbers and barbershops were deemed “non essential” during lockdown. That caused for a lot of barbers including myself to close down. A couple of skills that were most impactful for me were becoming more optimistic and also taking advantage of new technology wave and use social media to my advantage. Optimism helped me remain hopeful throughout the crisis and find ways of still earning income from outside the shop, by providing entertaining and educational barbering content online. To any up coming barbers I suggest to never be afraid of learning new skills and step out of your comfort zone.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
This one is pulling my heartstrings! The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instill in me an entrepreneurial mindset. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico in an agricultural family. So at 4-5 years old i remember helping my parents pick coffee beans, oranges, avocados. They owned 15 acres of land. Back then I was a child and didn’t understand the importance of building something for your own as opposed to working for someone else. I used to complain back then cause I wanted to play. But as i grew older I better understood life and all my parents sacrifices and what they were doing for us as a family. I would forever be grateful for that.
