We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brooke Westlund a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping my creativity alive involves a few key practices. I prioritize making time in the studio, ensuring I’m always engaged with a personal project or exploring new techniques. This continual experimentation with new mediums keeps my creative juices flowing.
With two young kids, my alone time and creative moments have become even more precious. It’s vital for me to carve out these personal spaces to nurture my creativity. Additionally, I’ve found joy in creating art with my children, turning playtime into a collaborative and creative experience. This balance of personal and shared creative activities helps me stay inspired and inventive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an artist specializing in abstract and mixed media paintings, creating unique pieces for homes and custom works for both individuals and businesses. In addition to my paintings, I’m passionate about contributing to the community through murals, and I’m excited to take on more mural projects.
Recently, I’ve expanded my creative journey into teaching, offering a variety of art classes. My classes include Pacific Northwest mixed media, abstract art, and floral art. I offer monthly classes that anyone can join, as well as private event classes where groups can come together to paint in my studio. This has been a rewarding way to share my love for art and help others explore their creativity.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think these qualities and skills are what are continuously impactful on my art business journey. 1 – Persistence: Continuously creating and diligently working to share your art with diverse audiences is crucial. Persistence helps you navigate challenges and ensures your work reaches and resonates with others. 2- Continuous Learning: Always striving to learn and try new things is vital. Embracing new techniques, mediums, and ideas keeps your work fresh and exciting, and helps you grow as an artist. 3- Self-Belief: Believing in yourself and understanding that your art brings joy to others is fundamental. Knowing that your work has a positive impact provides motivation and validates the importance of your creative journey.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who deeply loves and appreciates art, and has large walls in their home they wish to fill with meaningful, exciting pieces ( and as the money to pay for large custom artwork). They are eager to be involved in the creative process, selecting colors and elements that hold personal significance. At the same time, they trust my creative expertise to bring their vision to life, blending their input with my artistic interpretation to create a unique and impactful work of art.
