Meet Andrea Joy Tucker

We recently connected with Andrea Joy Tucker and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea Joy, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I overcame imposter syndrome by writing an achievement list several years ago, consistently adding to it and looking at it every now and again because it really puts into perspective how far I’ve come and not only how much I’ve accomplished, but how many answered prayers have come to fruition. Going thru my credentials and lanyards also helps because now I have to find more room to store them instead of keeping them in a small box! All of this helps shift my perspective, along with gratitude.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a multi-hyphenate in Sports and Entertainment! Each job varies in duties and roles, but I primarily work in Production alongside the Production Coordinators, Production Managers, and Producers. It could be as a Producer, Cast Manager, or the like! My favorite is getting more credits as a Producer, as my next major goal is to become affiliated with Producers Guild of America (P.G.A.) and produce more shows in entertainment and in sports on a larger scale.

What I get excited about is the fact that even with a great deal of experience, every day looks different. I like not allowing anyone (or even myself) to place me in a box. There’s truly no telling what’s next in this ever-evolving industry, but I’m grateful to be asked to come back to work on awards shows or any show that I’ve worked on for several seasons.

So far, my favorite gigs were getting the chance to work on “The Residence” for Netflix (Shondaland) up until the WGA strike last year, as well as the Academy Awards. I look forward to the day I’m listed as a Producer on a Shonda Rimes show and even as a Producer for the Academy Awards!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

3 skills that have helped me along this journey are being multifaceted, quick thinking, and flexible! I’d advise anyone early in their journey (regardless of your field) to be flexible and to never put all your eggs in one basket. Perfect whatever craft and skill comes to you naturally because it could be something else that can help make additional income, especially in current times.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I think a challenge many of us are facing is having to pivot due to the strikes, COVID, among other things. It’s like you can go from being established and settled to feeling like you have to start all over. Then, you’re constantly wondering if you should relocate, figure out your next career move, or if you should leave the industry altogether. It’s such a tough position to be in, especially for those of us in cities like LA and NYC that are already crazy expensive.
