Meet Jordi Nus

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordi Nus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jordi, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I think we all deal with imposter syndrome at a certain moments and in different degrees. In my case, it has become much better during the years. One key aspect is to look back on everything you’ve accomplished or worked on in the past. It’s very reassuring and much easier to overcome imposter syndrome if you’ve been working on your field for a few years and you have some projects to look back at.
I do think it becomes much more present when we start on a new project with a bigger scale or that it is very different to other projects you’ve worked on (or, in the same manner, if it’s one of your firsts projects). What it has worked for me is, instead of being overwhelmed by the whole scope of the project, to focus on small tasks to finish on different time scales (days, weeks…).

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a composer and violinist originally from Barcelona. I write music for films and TV shows as well as for theater and the concert hall. I’ve recorded violin for many artists and composers and I love collaborating with other musicians.
I enjoy recording any kind of sounds and instruments and then tweak and manipulate them to create interesting sounds and textures. I love incorporating those to the stories I get to write music for!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say perseverance, discipline and being positive. It’s really hard when you are at the beginning of your career to be patient and to think about the long term. It can feel very discouraging to not get any gig for a few months, but that’s something very common in our field. Our careers are not linear and, even after many years in the industry, we all are going to have periods when things slow down and other periods when all the projects come at once. It’s hard to not feel rushed at the beginning, but don’t give up and keep working and knocking on doors. And, as much as you can, don’t try to compare yourself with other colleagues, not everyone is as successful as they look on their Instagram!

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I recently became a dad! As much as it’s an endless source of joy and happiness, it has been quite challenging to juggle everything, specially since I am a freelancer and work from home. It is very convenient at a times since I have a flexible schedule, but it also makes it harder to be able to work on regular hours and uninterruptedly.

I had no idea how ridiculously expensive daycares are in this country, I believe it is a basic necessity and it’s something we should definitely change as a society…
