We were lucky to catch up with Germany Kent recently and have shared our conversation below.
Germany, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from self-discipline which is deeply rooted in gratitude. If I had to choose and share one strategy for success it would definitely be to have an attitude of gratitude. If nurtured, your gratitude will blossom into an abundance of optimism. Once you learn that optimism is a learned behavior that involves empowerment and transformation you will create change for yourself both personally and professionally.
No doubt, I would also add that my optimism certainly comes from counting my blessings. I’m way too blessed to be stressed. Each day that we rise to enjoy the sunrise we should remember that someone else did not. Everyday people around the globe are dying of various causes. I shall not forget that there are individuals who will never enjoy the beautiful ocean and sunsets that we take for granted.
Indeed, I am naturally inspired by optimistic people and tend to gravitate towards positivity. In times of major life transitions, I have always found solace in optimism. I’m at the stage in my life where I’m perfectly comfortable basking in gratitude because I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.
A life full of optimism gives you a life full of fortitude. I’ve found that once you embrace being grateful you see the change and things become purposefully calm. Then you continue to roll with it, push through, reflect, stay motivated, and every day it’s ready, set, goal.
I believe that optimism fuels inspiration for what you can do right now. For instance, for me optimism is intentional. I want to spread optimism on a global level. I want to be one of the people shaping the world by bringing more hope, inspiration, motivation, encouragement and empowerment through the power of optimism.
I’m thankful to share that my quotes on optimism have been featured in more than 1,300 articles globally. To date, hundreds of diverse websites throughout the world spotlight my quotes which currently can be found on Oprah.com, Parade, Good Housekeeping, Gratitude Powers DC led by the Washington D.C. Innovation Team, Yahoo Canada, MSN South Africa, Cosmopolitan UK, and Forbes India, just to name a few.
I’m grateful to touch so many lives through my quotes. It’s a gift I’ve been blessed with, and I have a responsibility to share, uplift, inspire, and encourage others. I’m thankful for having a platform. Recently, I was so humbled and excited to find out that one of my quotes appeared on the corporate website for the World Inspiring Network (WIN) based in Ghana.
“If you have the courage to connect with people from different races, nationalities, backgrounds, cultures, and regions, you have the power to bring about a change in the world.” – Germany Kent
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In addition to business, media, and entertainment endeavors, I partner with nonprofits to help promote volunteerism and bring about impactful change. Additionally, I’m focused on working alongside institutions and organizations fostering collaboration to enrich preventive health initiatives while advocating for resource advancements and policy changes.
At the same time, I’m happy to say that I have been at the forefront of advancing health equity for California’s women and girls through advocacy, education, and outreach. More recently, I had an opportunity to collaborate on initiatives increasing awareness about health equity working closely with the department of Health and Wellness for LA County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell’s office.
Not long ago, I led a campaign that resulted in a new health policy being passed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The new policy was signed into effect by the director Barbara Ferrer and directly benefits the well-being of women and girls in L.A. County.
Above all, I remain committed to making an intentional impact. I believe that a healthier future is possible when women are empowered to make choices in an environment where equal access and health justice are community priorities. Thus, advocating for policies and practices that address social determinants of health and eliminate disparities in women’s health outcomes has become a key issue for me.
In the past few years, I have partnered with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and I’m Every Woman Foundation (IEW) addressing pressing healthcare challenges for women in the Bahamas. Specifically, innovative and impactful initiatives have been executed by providing resources and awareness campaigns. I believe that by promoting awareness through mobilizations, events and community campaigns that is how we reach, support, educate, uplift and empower others.
Moreover, I strongly believe working in the capacity of leadership roles, as an advocate, and as an engaged participant has provided skilled-based instruction in policy, development, community organizing, coalition and network building. Additionally, the facilitation of such initiatives has raised my awareness of health and wellness and other social issues impacting women, girls and their families and communities, both locally and abroad.
Equally important, I intend on continuing building and strengthening partnerships and alliances with community-based organizations to expand the availability of culturally responsive programs and services, especially for those who are underrepresented. This will include advocating for resource advancements and policy changes that will help lead to a world more informed.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I would definitely say that three most important qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been the most impactful on my journey are tenacity, audacity, and resilience.
Always smiling, I appear as if nothing fazes me. But I have encountered many adversities and storms. However, I have no room for selfish anger blaming because gratitude, audacity and tenacity, gives me a creative spark and is creating a space for peace and well-being in my spirit.
When fighting battles, being resilient gives you a whole new authority and truly gives you the opportunity to increase your own power through the challenges of life. So when you get knocked down, in the words of Sara Jakes Roberts, “Girl get up.”
Bliss happens when you begin to see every silver lining at the intersection of passion and purpose because you are optimized. You are well equipped to be tenacious and audacious because you have faced obstacles. Further, I believe that audacity and tenacity fuels inspiration for what you can do right now. The outcome is not up to you. The outlook is.
I would also add that the best way to develop or improve on being more resilient is to not look to others to validate you. Overall, my optimism and the way I view life comes from my commitment to myself to live my life to the fullest, spiritually and emotionally.
It’s true that the road to becoming successful comes with many sacrifices. However, my advice would be to not sacrifice character, integrity, or who you are to try to fit into somebody who you are not. To thine own self be true and stay in your lane. Take control of your life and move forward with purpose.
I always tell people to have an attitude of positive expectation. I personally believe the key to a more wholesome life is optimism. But with that in mind, I say that optimism, tenacity, audacity, and being resilient comes from having the right mentality which is your best investment to flourish.
Be the light or the one who carries it. That’s power we all have and should use.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was that they taught me the meaning of hard work and how to multitask.
In them I saw two individuals who were multifaceted, pursuing their passions which led to longevity in their respective industries. Both of my parents are tenacious individuals who have contributed much to society through teaching, media, business, and government relations.
Over the years, I have been able to take away key factors from my parents and their respective careers. As a result, I have been able to tailor what worked best for them to reposition myself constantly in my own business and civic engagement initiatives.
Above all, I believe without a certainty of doubt that I would not have my work ethic or strong faith without the influence of my parents. I am proud of the strength and wisdom I’ve acquired, and because of their teachings and my upbringing I have a firm foundation with God. I will continue to walk by faith and thank them as I come into the woman that He has called me to be.
I’m grateful for my family, friends, health, success and the ability to make a difference. I am grateful for life.
