We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Heemsbergen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sophia with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Not only does it feel good within yourself when you accomplish something you worked diligently on, but it also feels good when you help someone else do the same. I think I learned that at a very young age. My personal work ethic is a culmination of the way I was raised, good (and bad) experiences, and certain expectations that I have set for myself. In childhood, and still to this day, my family instilled in me just how vital an enduring, tenacious work ethic is. I grew up in a household where hard work is emphasized; my mom and dad showed me first hand how successful, and fulfilled you can be by always trying your best. Getting straight A’s or winning the game was important, but asking questions in class or staying a little longer at practice – that’s where the real work is put in. I have my family to thank for teaching me how to consistently put my best effort in, even when it’s tough. As I grew older, I’ve been no stranger to obstacles. Good experiences, the ones where hard work pays off, are great because they reassure and reinforce the idea that you’re on the right path, that your heart is in the right place. But the “bad” experiences, the ones where the goal isn’t reached – those are challenging. I’ve come to realize that the “bad” experiences really aren’t bad, they’re a test. When that kind of issue arises, I remind myself of how hard I’ve worked to get here, as well as the privilege I have to do what I love. By overcoming challenges, a sense of confidence can be found in facing future ones. I also have set certain expectations for myself in how I work day to day. Personal values such as dedication, perseverance, integrity, and self-discipline are necessary when it comes to the foundation of my work ethic. I utilize these values every day; in my personal life, as well as now as a small business owner and creative. Running a business is demanding, but very rewarding, giving ongoing chances to learn and develop personally and professionally.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Howdy! I’m Sophia, founder/owner/creative behind a small clothing business – welcome to Apple Pie Apparel.
I grew up with strong roots in everything country, western, even rock n’ roll; whether it was my grandpa taking me to the races, or to see his horses, my dad putting Kenny Chesney on the radio, or getting into my mom’s western jewelry. As I got older I kept trying to find a brand that encompassed all of that, and came up empty handed. Where could I find a brand that valued all types of country? That’s when Apple Pie Apparel was born.
We are a small business, woman-owned, rootin’-tootin’ clothing and accessories brand that curates specific pieces based on everything country and western. Every subcategory of country & western you can think of — we got it. From rustic flannel shirts to vintage denim jackets, Apple Pie curates outfits that capture the spirit of America. A true Wild West outlaw in some ghost town? We’ve got the wardrobe you need. You feel best tatted up with a Harley-Davidson tee in a dive bar? Sounds good. Spend the summers up in Connecticut with your horses? We got you covered. Going hunting with your Dad in Georgia? We’ve got that too. Maybe you’re more of a Ms. Americana 4th of July queen? Don’t fret. Whatever country Pinterest board dreaming you’re doing, Apple Pie Apparel brought it to life.
Apple Pie Apparel showcases vintage, thrifted, second-hand items, as well as original Apple Pie tees and hoodies, to create various country vibes. Some of our past collections include Disco Cowgirl, Rural Gothic, Annie Oakley, and Snowbunnie; while some of our newer collections include Farmer’s Daughter, Lovergirl, and Steel Magnolia, set to release later this month. All of our collections showcase vintage tops, bottoms, shoes, or knick-knacks that adhere to the collection’s country vibe. Whether you’re line dancing at a honky tonk or enjoying a bonfire under the stars, our clothing will have you looking all gussied up.
At Apple Pie, not only does your new vintage wardrobe look cute, but when you shop pre-loved, you are choosing the sustainable option by giving clothing a second life. Shopping vintage reduces the environmental impact of the fashion industry, as well as discovering unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that may not be found in mainstream retail stores. We also recognize the importance of original designs, and by designing Apple Pie Originals, we aim to contribute to the diversity and vibrancy of fashion, pushing boundaries and inspiring new trends.
Keep a lookout for our last spring collection, Steel Magnolia, as well as our new summer collections coming out soon! If you are in the Southern Arizona area, please swing by one of our upcoming pop-ups to shop our inventory in person, schedule on our socials. Welcome to the rodeo, darlin’!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey so far, as well as anticipating what’s to come next, the three main qualities that are most impactful for me include effective communication, adaptability, and trust. Effective communication is key in business, and in life. Clear, precise communication enhances teamwork, strengthens bonds, and increases productivity. Whether it’s meeting new customers, sending a shipment out, conversing with other creatives, or actively messaging followers/clients on social media, communicating effectively leads to the best outcomes. Effective communication is a valuable asset in today’s fast-paced environment, making sure to take time with each conversation to be had. Adaptability is another impactful quality to have. Small business owners need to be flexible, while still focusing on their main goal; being able to “roll with the punches” if you will. I’ve noticed the more I welcome change, or different perspectives, and then adjust efficiently, those are the moments that new ideas present themselves, allowing growth. If your first plan doesn’t work, try, try again! Finally, on this little journey of mine, trust has sometimes been the hardest to have. Not only trust in my business plan, or trust that my customers will like, or continue to like what is released, but trust in myself, and trust that my dream isn’t just a dream. Every day, I work on trusting in my ability to make this business flourish. When I feel doubtful, or uncertain of the next best step, I always return to trust in God. If there is a time that I struggle with trusting myself, I am able to return to my faith in order to find the peace that sometimes escapes me. I then remember that valuing honesty, keeping promises, and being open with customers, and myself, is fundamental for a successful business, and life. Yeehaw!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
