We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Buynak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose found me. I always knew I wanted to pursue creativity but I didn’t know what that meant. It wasn’t until college that I finally got honest with my love of writing. And I’ve never looked back!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
From poetry to podcasting, I am a blue collar creative, just getting my hands dirty (and bloody) every day. And, baby, my hands are filthy! I have authored 13 books of poetry; host the coolest music podcast in the world—Bothering the Band—in which we ask our favorite musicians super silly questions like what’s your favorite shape of pasta? I also have a completed novel that I am shopping to publishers and agents; not to mention a screenplay and a children’s book in the works. I can’t turn it off.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My anxiety is directly linked to when I feel overwhelmed, and since you can see I am always doing a million creative things at once, it rears its ugly noggin a bunch (mostly on Tuesday afternoons). It sounds silly, but I make lists. Yes, practical to-do lists, but also listing out likes and dislikes, anything to get outside of my dumb head for a moment.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
With a mix of confidence and naivete, I am a creative swiss army knife, balancing work and wonder with optimism and work ethic. The only thing I will scream from the rooftops of the river to anyone pursuing something creatively is this: DON’T EVER GIVE UP!
