Meet Curtis & Amber Love

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Curtis & Amber Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Curtis & Amber, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

Our work ethic is born out of our love for each other and for the life that we share. We choose to show up every day, to work hard, and create a joyful and successful present, for a future of freedom and opportunity. We both had very different childhoods, but both learnt from an early age the value of working hard. We were raised to always show up on time, to ask questions if you don’t know, and to always try your best. We learnt the benefits of accumulating various skills and to always being willing to try something new. We have both pushed ourselves out of comfort zones in so many different ways. We see each day as a new opportunity and we choose to enjoy the challenges that present themselves along the way, as a chance to develop existing skills or learn something new. Our work ethic is pure discipline. We are both very strong willed, and understand that each and every task that needs to be done, is for the success of our business and for the freedom of our future selves. We have a long list of adventures planned!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

We offer pool cleaning, maintenance, and repair services in the Broward County area, done by individuals who genuinely enjoy the work that they do. We believe in working hard and enjoying our workday. We feel very grateful that as a couple, this job allows us to spend so much time together. We also love that it challenges us every day to learn a new skill or solve a new problem. And most of all, the time spent outside enjoying the sunshine!

With Cocoplum being the reason for our Visa, this means our opportunity to live and work here in Florida completely depends on the success of our business. We feel that this quality sets us apart, with the guarantee that we will go above and beyond in our work to provide excellent pool maintenance and customer service!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think confidence, risk taking, and determination have been the most impactful qualities in our journey.

I had confidence in the both of us as individuals, as a romantic couple, and as business partners. I knew we would tackle whatever was thrown at us to the best of our abilities, and that we would give this experience our best shot.

Risk taking is an essential part in starting a business. We spent over a year and a half researching the industry, taking all the necessary exams, designing a website, creating a company, and packing up our lives. We wrote a full business plan and Visa application. We then sold our home and every single possession we owned, invested every penny, with only the hope that we would be accepted. We took a huge risk with all the time and money we had invested, without knowing the Embassy would say yes. Luckily they did!

Our determination to live a rewarding and joyful life is what drives us. This business is an incredible opportunity for us to build the life we want and more. We are determined to make this life matter, and while it may not be our dream job, it most definitely is a dream opportunity!

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

I think a balance of both is important. Recognizing your strengths and focusing your main role on those, allows you to be confident in yourself and your abilities. I have a background in customer service and also in art and design, so I naturally gravitated towards the customer communications role, creating marketing material, web design, and social networking. Curtis used to work on construction sites and in laboratories, so was happy to teach himself all the different kinds of equipment repairs, and learn about water chemistry and maintenance. We found we both bring a good combination of valuable skill sets to the table!

It is also essential to invest efforts into improving other areas. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful people in our lives, who have kindly and generously given their time and knowledge. We genuinely feel like we learn something new every day in this line of work! We have both loved the opportunity to expand our individual skill sets. I most definitely feel like this job has made me a more capable and confident person!
