Meet Viri Dukes

We were lucky to catch up with Viri Dukes recently and have shared our conversation below.

Viri , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I have a deep appreciation for the work ethic my parents instilled in me. Their immigrant background and the values they have demonstrated, have clearly shaped my own approach to work and life. I see traits like dependability, reliability, trustworthiness, and dedication as integral to my own work ethic, reflecting what I’ve learned from my parents.

Many people find that their parents’ examples and values deeply influence their career choices and how they approach their professional lives. Not only do I admire these qualities in my parents but also strive to embody them in my own career. My gratitude and recognition of my parents’ influence can serve as a powerful motivator and guide as I continue to grow in my career and business

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the owner of ICONIC BY VIRI, a local golf brand that fills a niche for younger, sophisticated, and refreshing golf apparel. Recognizing a gap in the market for attractive and youthful golf clothing, I created something that resonates with a diverse audience, from professional women golf players to anyone seeking stylish and comfortable active wear.

My passion for my brand and the connection I feel with those who wear my clothing shines through. Dressing professional women golf players has been a significant honor, knowing that my designs are appreciated and chosen by athletes in the field.

By blending golf-inspired elements with fashion-forward and comfortable designs, I’ve made my brand accessible to a wider audience beyond traditional golfers. This versatility allows more women to enjoy my apparel both on and off the course, emphasizing both style and functionality.

Recently ICONIC BY VIRI added a Cycling Line as well and t’s been incredibly successful. ICONIC BY VIRI is not just about clothing but about creating a community and empowering athletes through my unique designs.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Balancing passion with realism when starting a business. It’s natural to be deeply invested in something you’re passionate about, and initially, it can be difficult to imagine setbacks or criticism.

My experience with my mentor highlighted the importance of seeking guidance and being open to feedback. While it might have been discouraging to receive initial criticism of my first set of items, I took this feedback constructively. Understanding that hearing “no” is part of the journey to eventual “yeses” is crucial in the entrepreneurial world.

Embracing realism doesn’t mean losing sight of your passion; rather, it’s about channeling that passion into a strategic approach that includes feedback, integration, and continuous improvement. I embraced this mindset and I’m on a path where learning from setbacks and refining my ideas are integral to my growth as an entrepreneur. I trusted my ability to adapt and evolve, and created what I have now.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Having a mentor who can provide support, guidance, and a different perspective is invaluable and definitely a must have. They can offer insights based on their experience, help you navigate challenges, and steer you towards making informed decisions that can lead to the success of your product and business.

Through interactions with your mentor, you can learn not only about business strategies but also about leadership, decision-making, and personal development. Their guidance can accelerate your learning curve and help you avoid common pitfalls.

In essence, a mentor is a trusted advisor who invests in your success, offering wisdom, support, and practical assistance to help you navigate the journey of entrepreneurship effectively. Continuing to cultivate a strong relationship with your mentor can be instrumental in achieving your business goals with confidence.
