We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SkyLee Edmiston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SkyLee, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I have learned to be effective/successful by being passionate about everything I do. If you’re passionate and LOVE what you do there is no other option but to work hard and be dedicated because you want to give all to your goals, be the best, make dreams come true and stand out!
I’ve never been afraid to be the odd one out, the oddball, the unique one and I think it’s because I know who I am and I’m ok if I don’t fit in.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My primary focus has always been on supporting cancer patients and anyone dealing with skin issues, self-esteem challenges, diseases, disorders, and skin barrier problems. I believe skincare should be accessible to everyone and not just considered a luxury. This past year I decided to integrate my nonprofit and my spa to better serve everyone!
Additionally, I’m passionate about education. With nearly 15 years of experience in beauty schools, I’ve recognized the need for higher standards in education and continued learning. I’m currently developing a continuing education institute that will be unique in the state. This institute will offer courses for new estheticians who feel their initial education was insufficient, seasoned professionals seeking to elevate their skills, and consumers who want to better understand their own skin and its challenges. I’m excited to bring these opportunities to our community.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The ability to grow, confidence and giving more than you take. As cheesy as these seem, I don’t believe I’d be where I am without them.
One of the best things I ever learned was that you have to be willing to take a step back and look at yourself and your faults. I read somewhere that “everything feels like an attack to someone who’s not ready to take accointability” and that hit hard.
In this industry you can’t take things personal, you can’t have preconceived notions and you cannot have bias.
You have to be confident in yourself, your skills and your uniqueness. Otherwise, you spend too much time worrying about everyone else and being jealous, insecure and petty.
You cannot constantly take. From clients, other professionals, colleagues, etc. If you’re not giving more than you’re taking you’ll never be successful or respected in this industry and you set a bad example, especially if you’re an Educator.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with so many individuals.
I’d love to find more professionals helping cancer patients to share our offerings and skills with and refer out to.
I’d love beauty/wellness professionals who want to teach something they’re a master of to work with me at my institute.
I’d love to work with companies that want to educate their employees on the importance of skincare, sun protection and wellness to offer seminars.
