We recently connected with Robert Nunn and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I am born and raised in Los Angeles, California which has a very diverse community so it’s not something I really think about. I just try to focus on using my abilities in the best way that I can when I am given the opportunity. To be successful in competitive industries like sports & entertainment you need to have really thick skin and understand that even if you do everything right and you deserve to be there, it can take time to be noticed, valued and appreciated. Not necessarily because of race or culture, it’s more about having to ‘pay your dues’ and be patient and consistent. For example, you could be the best barber in the world but you may not be able to convince a customer to leave the barber they have been with for years simply because of the relationship and trust they have built with their current barber. Being successful also has to with being reliable and available. We live in an unfair and imperfect world but I believe the cliche of if you work hard that success will follow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I architect solutions for increased user engagement through the strategic use of tech enabled printed static images.
I’m an award-winning creative entrepreneur, founder, tech advisor, and enterprise client account manager. Specializing in tech enabled physical artist merch, strategic partnerships, and data capture, my expertise is in enabling companies to communicate their campaign objectives through their printed content by combining static images with video, audio and animation.
I work with senior leadership teams at Live Nation Entertainment — touring and merch side — navigating live concert fan experience challenges through an innovate lens, taking pride in assisting in creating world-class unique experiences, while being a trusted partner in various roles.
Recently, I have worked on artist merch and in arena fan experiences for Usher, Tate McRae, Thomas Rhett, One Republic & Coldplay among others.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My advice is that it’s important to remember what is shown on social media is a highlight reel of peoples lives. It’s hard to live a life of being an Entrepenuer instead of a 9-5 job with a guaranteed paycheck. It can and probably will take years of failed attempts (which becomes lessons) before success happens. You need to also always be solution orientated and understand what your client is looking to accomplish and sometimes that is as simple as asking them what their goals of a project are. It’s also important to pay attention to the habits of successful people. Beyond just the things you see online; it’s about understanding little things. Sitting in on a zoom meeting with a mentor to see how they control the room and flow of a meeting. Essentially learning winning habits.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Letting me be me. My dad Bobby Nunn is a self made musician and entrepreneur as well so growing up I was able to learn a lot from the ups and downs that come with being self employed and finding a way to paid for doing the things you love instead of the a job you have to do. Some families put a lot of pressure on their kids to graduate from a certain school or enter a certain field and I was fortunate my parents more focused on making sure I was a high quality and caring human being and let me figure out the rest.
