We were lucky to catch up with Glen Long recently and have shared our conversation below.
Glen, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’m not so sure that I have yet! on one hand I wake up every day very confident in what we are doing at Reliable Commercial Containers and for our customers. The very positive customer feedback that we have received as a younger company is a little surreal sometimes and has been extremely motivating. With that being said, there is always something that needs to be tweaked, always something that didn’t go as planned, always something that can be done better. When things aren’t going in your direction it’s easy to question yourself and your abilities and wonder if you have what it takes to lead and succeed. Always overcoming daily obstacles putting one step in front of the other, especially when it’s tough, confirms my belief in what we are doing for our customers. We’re here to stay.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The truth is we are purely a customer service company that happens to run dumpsters/portable toilets. Reliable Commercial Container’s 24 hour turnaround time is a promise to the customers who put their faith in us that they will receive the most reliable service in the industry. The 24 hour policy means two things: 1. We answer the phone 24/7, no matter what. 2. Any request for our services is met and executing within 24 hours.
Our “put our money where our mouth is” approach has propelled us to early success and has helped us in our journey of creating a brand known for white glove customer service.
This approach is no different than the approach I took on Wall Street and no different than what lead to my success in healthcare. The only thing that matters in any industry is figuring out what is truly needed and giving ample attention to that. In all of my personal experience in business the primary need from customers has always been customer service.
The next step in being different than yours competitors is figuring out what customer service actually means in your particular industry, and focusing on those things.
As far as expansion goes we certainly have plans to open more locations across the state of North Carolina as well as expanding into other states. We aren’t looking to run before we can walk as we know great things are built over time – but it’s important to have long term goals while executing short term goals.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most important thing about being on a journey is acknowledging that it really is a journey. Overcoming the obstacles that life and business throw at you is much more enjoyable/bearable when you understand the reality of how much time and effort it takes to build something of true value. Good things don’t come easy and great things don’t come without great effort. It’s important to remember that in our world of instant gratification and online exposure to false realities.
Remaining positive throughout the journey isn’t always easy. But I think trying to prioritize positivity is important.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are looking to partner with any business or individual generating debris on construction sites in the Greater Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. Reliable service on the waste side of construction is key in keeping job sites safe, clean, and on time. Back ups on job sites due to waste piling up, which many contractors deal with unfortunately, can be one of the biggest avoidable head aches that project managers and super intendants come across. The reason we exist is to alleviate that burden and make sure that is never a thought in the minds of the customers we serve. We owe it to them.
