Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maria-Alejandra Icaza Paredes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maria-Alejandra, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
My creativity thrives on curiosity and the willingness to explore. One of the most important lessons I learned in design school was the value of sketching hundreds of ideas for a single concept, pushing past initial, ordinary thoughts to uncover truly innovative ones. Curiosity drives me to understand how things work and how they are made, leading me to explore new materials and techniques. I love experimenting with different mediums and combining them in unconventional ways to continually push boundaries. Among the many materials I’ve worked with, ceramics have captivated me the most.
In the past, I felt mortified about wasting precious materials on unsuccessful ideas, especially in a world already filled with trash. I believed that only truly meaningful creations deserved the investment of materials. However, working with clay has alleviated this concern because it can be reclaimed and reused endlessly. This process wastes as little as possible, enabling continuous refinement and allowing me to embrace the trial-and-error process without guilt. Maintaining creativity requires dedication and perseverance, involving constant experimentation and a readiness to start over. By embracing curiosity and committing to the journey of discovery and refinement, I keep my creative spirit vibrant and productive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Panamanian multidisciplinary designer and architect based in Miami, FL. My portfolio spans across various projects, from interiors and furniture to products and art installations, with a primary focus on residential and hospitality sectors. In addition to my diverse design work, I’ve also founded MAIPdesigns, a studio dedicated to crafting unique and functional pieces.
My design journey kicked off with studies in Florence, Italy, followed by an architecture degree in Panama. Seeking to refine my skills further, I pursued dual master’s degrees in furniture and industrial design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Drawing from a fusion of design disciplines, my work is shaped by a quest for knowledge and a desire to be a well-rounded designer. From architectural principles of balance and utility to a newfound appreciation for detail and materials from design school, I strive to create designs that are both harmonious and impactful.
My ventures in ceramics have gained recognition through exhibitions, online features, and accolades, including a spot in a book highlighting 100 Emerging Artists. These achievements underscore my unwavering dedication and passion for my craft.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three key qualities have been crucial: a dedication to growth, the courage to trust my instincts and remain genuine, and a curiosity-driven adaptability. Embracing continuous learning has driven me to seek new experiences and expand my skills, complemented by the bravery to follow my instincts and stand out authentically. Moreover, curiosity has sparked deeper understanding, and adaptability has enabled me to navigate challenges with resilience.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Growing up immersed in creativity and encouraged to explore my artistic interests profoundly shaped my perspective. Art and design are now integral to how I perceive and interact with the world, constantly analyzing objects for their form, function, and potential for improvement. My parents provided invaluable support and education, never dismissing my ideas but encouraging me to pursue my passions wholeheartedly. My mother, a sculptor, has been my artistic confidante and motivator, fostering a nurturing environment for exchanging ideas and supporting each other’s creative ventures. Her encouragement inspires me to strive for excellence, push boundaries, and explore new concepts, serving as a constant reminder to be my best self.
