Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Moses Mikheyev. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Moses, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I think one of the consistent themes I see in success is an unwillingness to give up in the face of failure or pushback. If someone says you should stop singing, or writing, or making a movie, most of the time that doesn’t really mean much. What I mean is: for every person that hates your art there will be another person (or ten or twenty) who absolutely adore it. And sometimes a No just means “No—for now.” That is, sometimes you may be on the right path but you just need to work harder at it. And that’s fine too. Babylon wasn’t built overnight. Nothing was built overnight. Plenty of successful people have left behind them a trail of catastrophic failures—which, in the end, led to success. They were able to build on their failures—step over them, on them—and reach their goals.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m currently working on my alternative rock debut album titled I Only Have A Hundred Years to Love You. The album is coming out (hopefully!) this year. Recently, I teamed up with ZAANO—an alt-rock LA-based band—on a single titled “The Fire of Fires.” The song is dropping June 21, 2024. It’s a fun, upbeat rock pop song with soaring chorus that’s going to make for a perfect addition to a Summer 2024 Spotify playlist! We’re all really stoked about it.
I’ve also been working on another science fiction novel. It’ll take me a few years to write, but I’m already a third of the way through. It’s tentatively titled “F2F.” I’m really excited for my fans to read it!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think filtering the noise is one of the most important skills any artist needs to have. Be very, very careful whom you listen to. That is, don’t listen to naysayers who may just be jealous or who don’t necessarily “get” you. There is almost always an audience for whatever it is you love and create. For example, you should never ask for feedback on a horror movie from a person who hates horror films. You should never ask for feedback on a pop song from a person who only listens to country—and hates pop music. Know your audience! And when you do know your audience, then proceed to “filter the noise.” Filter out whose opinion matters and whose doesn’t. That’s something that is incredibly difficult to do. It requires experience, intuition, and wisdom. I can’t teach you how to do it, I can just point you in the general direction. Filter the noise!
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
As a novelist, I am constantly reading books. I love, love books! I have two books that I wholeheartedly recommend for any artist in film, music, or writing. The first is called “Hitmakers: How to Succeed in an Age of Distraction” by Derek Thompson. The second book is called “Perennial Seller: The Art of Making and Marketing Work that Lasts” by Ryan Holiday. Both are absolutely incredible books, very inspiring, and I’ve read both numerous times (a rare feat, as I do not re-read books).
