We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jared Sampson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jared below.
Hi Jared, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Simply put, I developed a work ethic over the years because good things do not come without hard work. Throughout my life, like most people, I have struggled – internally, with myself, and in most other ways as well. I know that there is no option to stop; no quit button available for me. I simply want to do better every day, and get after whatever is in front of me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At Sampson Woodcrafting LLC, I provide exceptional quality wooden pieces of all shapes and sizes to clients who are interested in something truly unique, and built to their specifications. I take great care to pay attention to the details in all that I do, and that translates to truly unique craftsmanship. I strive to get a full understanding of what the client wants, and make it work for them.
I never thought I would make something artistic, as I was never that way growing up. I suppose when I first started getting back into woodworking I found that the care and effort you put into something is seen by others. There is a feeling of overwhelming pride and satisfaction that is felt when I deliver a piece to a client and they fall in love – to be honest, THAT is why I do what I do. Even if it is for myself or my family, seeing the appreciation of my wife and children when I have made a new table, or some shelves – as simple as that may be – that drives me to keep creating.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Firstly, determination has played a role in my woodworking career; there were several times that I thought this may have been better as a hobby, but I realize that the more I say “yes” the more I learn, the more I grow, and the more exposure I receive.
Secondly, trusting myself was difficult to do. I had never made a bed before I made mine – but it is the strongest bed I have ever slept in! It took time for me to gain confidence in my abilities, but now I look at everything as a challenge that can be conquered.
Lastly, I have become a people-person. Although this doesn’t help me in my woodworking directly, I would not have any jobs if I were dry and non-conversational. I find that making personal connections with people comes naturally to me, and people are more trusting of those they are able to connect with, so it has helped to grow my brand as not only a talented craftsman, but also as a genuinely nice guy who wants to make something amazing for my clients.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
At the moment I am a full time Engineering student, which obviously has had an impact on my business. I have had several jobs in my life, and I decided that in order to be able to properly run my woodworking business, I’ll need to make some changes to my current situation. Going to school is taking a toll on my woodworking time, which in turn is adding time to projects that would have normally taken less time.
I plan to complete my degree and find full-time employment so that I can build a shop and continue my business on the side.
