Meet Josh Ambrose

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Ambrose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My Father. To it add more clarity, I watched my Father work 3 jobs at one point, just to provide for our family. My Father was not college educated and had a regular job at our local hospital. However, that income was not enough to provide for our family of 5, so at a very early age for me, my Father started a side business of cutting lawns. Additionally, he had a 3rd job cleaning parking lots late at night, after stores closed. Every since I was about 7-8 years old. I worked with my Dad for those two side jobs. I didn’t know it a the time, but I was witnessing someone who knoew he needed to work and needed to have a strong work ethic, in order to provide of rhis family. He rarley had any “free” or “down” time, except for Sundays. He would work at the hospital all week, cut lawns 3-4 afternoons/evnings per week and all day-Saturday, and he would also clean parking lots 1-2 nights per week. SO what I witnessed was someone who worked hard, made no excuses, and provided for his family. Since I was able to work alongside him and earn money myself, I inherintely absorbed those same values and work ethics I didn’t even know I was observing at the time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I spent 24 years in the Marine Corps before retiring in 2021. From there I went to Corporate America, but I also simultaneously started my first business, a Franchise: Mosquito Hunters. Since starting that in 2021 I’ve grown the business tremendously, grown the team, became a leader within the franchise, and mentoerd many new Franchisees. I am married with 3 kids and th eonly way I’m able to have a family life while working a full-time job and runnig a business, is because I quickly built a team to run the operations of the business.

At Mosquito Hunters, we provide far more than just Mosquito control. We also provide: Tick Control, Flea/Noseeum Control, Fire Ant Control, and Perimeter Pest Control for your home.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
What i’ve found most impactuful are some of the lessons I also like to pass onto others:

1. Never close a door on an opportunity before first hearing it all out. Don’t let your preconceived notions dictate your future.

2. Owning a business iwll always cost more than you plan, so plan for that.

3. Your first 3 years are probably the most important years of your business. If you go all out those furst 3 years, you’ll be set up for success far better than those that tried to coast through.

4. The success or failure of your business rests on your shoulders, no matter what. You cannot be a business owner and have a W-2 mindset.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Extreme Ownership, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Many of the thoughts provided in that book were leadership lessons learned during my time in the Marine Corps. It’s a mindset of servant leadership and it is the backbone of what right looks like. As an example, if one of my employees does something wrong, it’s not their fault, it’s mine. I should’ve explained it better, in more detail. It’s thoughts like this that build great teams who achieve far more than expected.
