Meet Leah Kershaw

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leah Kershaw a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Leah, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes with the knowledge that every day is a new day. With every new day comes a chance to rewrite my narrative, to learn from my missteps, and to forge a path toward a brighter future. My belief in the transformative power of new beginnings empowers me to approach challenges with resilience, setbacks with grace, and triumphs with gratitude. My optimism is born from the understanding of time’s renewal. It fuels my spirit and propels me forward, reminding me that even amidst adversity, there is always hope on the horizon.

For a small business owner like myself, my optimism acts as a guiding light through the inevitable challenges and uncertainties of entrepreneurship. It fuels the unwavering belief in my vision, the resilience to overcome setbacks, and the motivation to persevere even when faced with adversity. Optimism allows me to see opportunities where others may only see obstacles, and to approach problems with a solution-oriented mindset. It is the secret ingredient that transforms setbacks into stepping stones.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My focus for 2024 is spending more time creating customized flannel shirts for my online stores. I grew up in the 1990’s and flannel was an essential item during that time. Since then I have always had a love for flannels, so much that I have earned the nickname “Queen of Flannels”. After discovering screen printing, fabric paints, and embroidery machines, it seemed natural to combine the two to make some fabulous pieces. I have enjoyed creating unique pieces for my clients who also love flannels!

Something I love about my company, ECOPOSH4U LLC., is that we save so many great flannel shirts from the landfills. This is something that most Resellers feel good about because we know we are helping the planet and our customers, by bringing them so many great items at great prices.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Staying organized. This is so important to do in the early stages of starting your business, especially so you can establish a system to make your small business run smoother as it begins to grow. It can be easy to get overwhelmed and staying organized will keep your anxiety down so nothing piles up or gets overlooked.

2. Be professional and kind to your customers. This may seem like a no-brainer, but there is so much bad customer service these days, so behaving this way will make you stand out and will encourage customers to come back. Being friendly and helpful goes a long way.

3. Don’t give up. There will be days you feel like quitting or don’t feel like doing something. Just make sure to do it anyway. Hard work and effort pay off when its repeated on a consistent basis.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Its easy to feel overwhelmed, especially in 2024 with so much going on in the World. When I am feeling this way I try the following things:

1. Break it down: Divide the overwhelming task into smaller, more manageable steps.
2. Prioritize: Focus on the most important or urgent tasks first.
3. Set boundaries: Learn to say “no” to additional commitments when you’re already stretched thin.
