Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bryce Damuth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Bryce, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
For me, it was a conscious decision at first. In 2004, I moved to Nashville, TN with a group of friends. They moved for the music. As a non-musician, I had space to explore and try to find my “thing”. So it was a stated goal after I moved that I would live without fear, I would keep myself open to any opportunity that came my way and would not shy away from them. That first year, I branched out a ton. I kind of fell into a job as an auto tech (something I had zero experience with prior) and got to learn about cars. I took acting classes. I did karaoke for the first time. And each time I tried something new, I grew. So that uneasiness that can come from trying something new turned into a craving for me, and that craving has taken me on some awfully fun adventures in life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Right now, I’m trying to find my footing again. I’ve been a stand-up comic since 2010, I’ve been drawing even longer. I still do both to an extent, but I’ve had a few family/personal setbacks the past several years that has thrown off any momentum I once had going. Stand-up wise, I’ve relocated to Cincinnati which has a great comedy scene. I’ll be performing in their Cross-Town Comedy Festival on Aug 2nd, and I’d like to start branching out to the surrounding cities. Artistically, I’m taking more chances. My big goal right now is to create a cartoon. I have a rough draft of the first episode written, but then it’ll be a feat to learn the animation process. But I’m here for the ride.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Work-ethic: This is something I still struggle with sometimes. But you have to put the work in. Being great or talented is great, but if you’re just sitting on that and not sharing with the world, you won’t move forward.
Humility: Again, I’ve not always exemplified this. I try, but that ego is a sunnuva. But like with anything, there’s always going to be someone better, faster, smarter, etc. Watch them. Be a fan of your peers. You can learn so much to improve your own game when you admit that you don’t know it all.
Grace: This is as much to yourself as others. Be gracious with yourself. You’re not always going to be great, sometimes your work ethic is going to suck. Sometimes you’re going to try something new and it doesn’t work. Let yourself suck. Sucking is the first step in a new endeavor. Very few are great from the word go. Sucking gives you something to build on.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
For comedy, my current isolation has really stunted my writing. Since Covid, I’ve been almost exclusively been doing WFH jobs, which definitely has its perks, but having had that regular interpersonal interaction was really kind of a shortcut in comedy writing. Maybe a friend at lunch would bring up a topic you might not have even considered and it sparks joke after joke after joke. It’s definitely something I took for granted before. Since then, I’ve still written what I think are strong bits, but I have to be more intentional about writing, which can be tough (See the work ethic point)
