We recently connected with Marie Bodine and have shared our conversation below.
Marie, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience didn’t always come naturally for me. I had to face adversity on a regular basis in order to create something positive from situations that initially seemed hopeless. Many of my previous conflicts occurred due to lack of self awareness. Over the years, I realized that I was the major player in my challenges to living a life that was enjoyable.
In order to live a resilient life, I continually put myself in situations where I am required to grow. I have found this is the key to generating personal and professional success.
I feel good trying new things, and have deep compassion for myself when things don’t turn out as I expect. I keep course-correcting until I succeed.
Since 2003, I have experienced seven people taking their own lives for various reasons. I have learned to turn these tragic events into profound learning experiences. I contribute to my community by inspiring others to learn effective coping strategies and to positively action their way through stressful events or crisis. Suicide is an option, asking for help is also an option. In the depths of a crisis, we still have choices. I now share information about resilience in my own community, and in the first responder and military communities as well.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Most people are beginning to see cold exposure trending in the media.
Before it came to be as popular as it is now, I was studying to become a certified instructor in 2018 to teach people how to use gradual cold exposure as a tool for wellness. When we combine specific breath patterns along with other practices such as cold exposure, incredible outcomes can be achieved that result in dramatically improved and trackable health outcomes.
Nowadays I travel internationally teaching high level thinkers, busy professionals, first responders and some elite military teams. We learn how to self regulate and use our minds and bodies in powerful ways that code for long term health and success.
For those that cannot learn from me in person, I created an online community at innerpeaceportal.com where members meet monthly to rebalance the entire body and mind with breathing and meditation practices. They get access to the latest information on additional resilience practices, they receive coaching and group challenges, and have a library of online recordings to energize or wind down anytime, anywhere. I am truly astounded at the results members have achieved in as little as 8 weeks.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity and persistence is a major driver of my success. The more great questions I ask the further I develop, and the more my confidence grows.
I choose to find online mentors. I ask all types of successful people for feedback and for insight instead of trying to do everything on my own as I did in the past.
I often tell other ambitious people just starting out to expect to put in the hours. There is no shortcut to long term success. Definitely have fun while you’re working, because there’s no prize at the end of your life for needlessly suffering. Have a good time. Welcome making intelligent mistakes. Respect yourself, love yourself, and work diligently because life is really short.
Stay positive and ignore people that try to give you advice who aren’t successful themselves. Be ready to course correct a lot, know your personal values, and always help others succeed along the way. Remember that kindness is free, and it could make all the difference in someone’s day.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who lives a healthy active lifestyle and considers themselves outwardly successful, but deep down feels overworked and unappreciated at home. They worry that at the end of their life they won’t get to a place of true happiness or contentment. “I’ll feel good when..” Is what is running through their mind often, and they don’t know how to make that nagging feeling stop. Buying things only makes them feel more empty. I’ve definitely been there and chose to work my way out of that mental spin cycle.
How do we completely turn this mindset around?
I show people how to get to their next level of success using a framework of specific positive mindset skills.
I have a gift of accelerating mental growth in a short amount of time in a measurable and meaningful way, and my clients have fun doing it. I really wish I had a version of myself 20 years ago to coach me to the personal and career success I have today. I could have saved decades of wasting time If I had known and used these powerful techniques!
Today, I am living a life I truly never knew I could live because I work on my thought processes. I am excited to spread this energy to help create more harmony for everyone.
