Meet W. C. filmore

We were lucky to catch up with W. C. Filmore recently and have shared our conversation below.

W. C. , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I would have to say that you don’t ‘find your purpose’, it finds you. For me purpose is that thing that nags at you in corner of your mind. The voice that pushes you to finish that project. Purpose is that force that gets you up in the morning. Don’t get me wrong we all have to pay bills, but I’ve always found time to pursue the passion of creating. Whether it’s writing my novels, short stories or marketing ads.
In my youth a friend of mine, Sam Brown, and I created a comic book that we circulated around our high school. We wrote, drew, and inked the panels. that was a big boost, and I was hooked. We got a teacher who was head of the school newspaper to print it. I had been writing short stories and sending them out to horror magazines after that. I got nothing but rejections, yet some publishers sent word of encouragement.
Those early encounters shaped what has taken me a lifetime to build; a collection of horror stories taken from my travels around the eastern seaboard. from Baltimore to Miami and Jacksonville to New Orleans.
My purpose of telling tales came at a really young age and even with life’s ups and downs it has never left. It is always there cooking up another twisted treat.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

“Dark Urban Mythos” is not only my brand genre it’s also the slogan in my logo. A phrase that came to describe the type of writing I compose in my self-published books. I offer readers searching for a smart, original and fun way to pass the time as they travel, like we all do, with one of my short-story quick-reads. If you’re a fan of “The Twilight Zone”, The Outer Limits”, “Ray Bradberry Theater” or “Creep Show” then my books “Filmore’s Double-Dose of Dark Urban Mythos, Vol. #1, #2, #3 is what you’ve been looking for. Each book has two short sinister stories of twisted urban lore taken straight from your live feed.
Or try one of my two stand-alone novels, “Dark Paradise of the Dead”, and “Maxwell’s Traveling Gypsy Circus”. Each novel takes two separate tales and intertwines them into one action packed horror fest.
Traveling to different book festivals all over the southeast of the United States you will be able to not only meet me but pick up a logo t-shirt, poster and other special items. come on a journey and discover a word tucked in the shadows, right outside your peripheral vision. Remember you can always leave the lights on.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

the qualities and skills that have impacted my journey is the ability to work with others. Teamwork makes the dream work. After you write the last word in your manuscript you must use the expertise of an editor to polish your work, then a formatting stylist for the interior of the book and a cover designer for the front, back and spin. The next is to know what you’re getting in to. the publishing business has changed so much in the past fifteen years and self-publishing has taken on a life of its own. Thanks to the web and apps I’m able to produce high-quality materiel at a reasonable price.
The knowledge of self-promotion and marketing are lessons that one must master in this social world in order to get your name out to the masses. using social media and ads I’ve been able to muster five thousand downloads on my own. That doesn’t sound like a lot if your name is Walter Mosley or Stephen King but for an unknown author with a modest budget it’s a trip to the moon.
My advice to anyone wanting to get in this business is to learn the field or genre that you want to write in, then study the self-publishing world and last make a point to get familiar what it takes to market your product and yourself. There are always folks who want to discover that next underground author. I always remind people they are supporting an independent author and publisher.
This is not a get rich quick scheme but a life choice that will take years to master. So, if you determined to be a published author you must be in it for the long haul because that is where the skills and knowledge are gained.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I was raised by my adopted parents who made it a point to introduce me to reading at an early age. There is one thing about being raised in a religious family, you learn to read the bible as you learn to walk. So reading was second nature. Once my adopted mother saw that I had devoured every book in the house she bought a set of encyclopedias that gave me a chance to travel around the world, visit great historical events, and learn of people whose stories should never be forgotten. All without leaving my living room.
