We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlie Mustard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charlie, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from witnessing first hand the effects of others generosity towards my family and community. People spending their time and money to make their surroundings better and in doing so making my world better.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For thirty years I have been the person roasting coffee for Jittery Joe’s in Athens, Georgia. I have roasted millions of pounds of coffee one small batch at a time, learning everyday of those thirty years. The most exciting part of my job is connecting and learning from people in my community and beyond.
We are constantly participating in exciting brand collaborations with all types of individuals, bands and businesses. Pete the Cat and Jason Isbell are our newest collaborations!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Trying to find more than one answer to a situation and then choosing the best option for the time being. A lot of times the first answer is the most expensive or time consuming. For other makers/creators I also suggest treating your process like a science experiment and changing one variable then analyze what the effects are. In my case, I can roast coffee an infinite number of ways, so I change one variable and then see what it taste like.

Just as I described that there are infinite ways to roast coffee, there are also infinite ways to collaborate with others when it comes to coffee. It is the third most consumed beverage in the world behind water and tea and the second most traded commodity behind oil! It’s in everyone’s world and I love to collaborate.
