Meet Cameron Russell

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cameron Russell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up, I didn’t need to look far for a role model because I had my grandad, father, and brother who helped mold me into who I am today. The men in my generation have always been extremely diligent. I have been shown what work ethic looks like and have truly applied that to my life as well as my business.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Russell Brothers Farms is a black owned business whose goal is to change the outlook of store bought and farm fresh foods one table at a time. Our mission is to provide Charlotte & its local surrounding areas with fresh, nourishing produce & beef. We specialize in raising grass-fed black angus cows, pasture raised chicken and hogs. Along with lamb and goat. The principle of our farm is non-GMO, organic products so our customers can live a healthier lifestyle and know what they are consuming.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three skills that were the most impactful in my journey were listening, observing, and researching. When first getting into the farm and cattle business, I had to listen to my mentors advice on how to start but also how to conduct my business. Observing is a vital skill that all business owners should obtain. I was able to observe my granddad with the care of livestock and the farm. Although i was able to pick up a lot of skills from others I did learn from doing my own research. Such as regenerative grazing and the the importance of wholesome grass-fed meat. My advice for people early in their farming journey would be, to attend as many seminars that are offered by local agriculture companies and universities. Starting here allows beginner farmers to learn and also get a hands on experience of a variety of different farming options that are out there.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle we are currently facing as a business is supplying the high demands. Since COVID the demand for organic, grass fed products has sky rocketed. We are currently purchasing more property as well as networking with more processors. The most important step we are taking is increasing the reproduction of our cattle. More cattle means more beef for our customers!
