We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic was honed through my experiences in high school and college. Balancing academics, part-time jobs, and extracurricular activities required effective time management and a strong commitment to my responsibilities. These experiences taught me the importance of discipline and hard work. In addition I was a football player, which required a great deal of discipline and time management skills. Post college, I entered the U.S. Army and served as an Operating Room Technician. That position taught how to prepare for a procedure, how to conduct myself in surgery and hone in on the procedure always staying a step ahead of the surgeon. I suppose I have always had a strong work ethic, starting with my very first job, as a seventh grader, delivering newspapers in the New England winters. Those aforementioned experiences paved a highway for me to follow in my adult years and I have never changed. Whatever it takes, how long it takes and where
ever it takes, just get the job done.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I think the story of GOAT The Magazine is the best place to start. It says alot about who I am and what I believe in. About six years ago I was working with a magazine company and decided to look into obtaining interns from the local University, University of Las Vegas, Nevada. I was able to succeed at being part of their “journalism intern job fair.” That is where I met my business partner, for GOAT, Andre Brown. He completed his eight week, or so, internship with us and went on to graduate. About two years ago, he called me and wanted to discuss an idea. He was aware that I always wanted to create a sports magazine in Las Vegas. We had a discussion, which led to more discussions and out of those discussions GOAT The Magazine was born.
I am a Business Consultant, by trade, and realized starting a new project would put a huge burden on me, my time and my energy, but never realized how much that burden would be. Here we are on the precipice of the launch of this magazine in two weeks and still putting in the work, the long hours, the multitude of discussions, with no idea where it will lead. But we put in the work, for as long as it takes to get the job done. I am all about helping as many folks as I can realize their dream, even if it burdens me. That is what I am committed to. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, “If I can help somebody, as I travel along, if I can help somebody with a word or song,if I can help somebody from doing wrong, my living shall not be in vain”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Embracing high school and being involved in as many activities I could fit into my day.
2. Serving in the military prepared me for things I never would have imagined
3. Have a open and willing heart.
My advice would be to take advantage of all opportunity that set before you and don’t expect anything to be handed to you. Technology may be replacing a lot of things, but success will alway rely on hard work and self-discipling. Be willing to go the extra mile, stay one step ahead of your competition and never, ever stop learning.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Aside from the challenges of life, my current obstacle is trying to obtain advertisers for my magazine. Since we are new and we don’t have the usual demographics to use to sell we have to become creative. I have been reaching out, directly, to people who I feel have businesses which align with GOAT The Magazine’s soci-athletic theme. I have started to get a little traction, but not as much as I had thought. It’s back to the drawing board, yet once again, to come up with a solution..whatever it takes, as long as it takes to get the job done.
