Meet Renata Osses

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Renata Osses. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Renata, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

As an artist, keeping my creativity alive is fundamental for my craft. I am not going to lie, because keeping up with routines or doing what “we like” is hard sometimes, the secret is that even if you forget or you stop for a little bit, you come back, you always have to come back. As an actress, the main thing is keep studying, watch movies, watch TV shows, but the most important for me is to REHEARSE and play, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have anything lined up, pick the script from your favorite play or sides from your fav TV show, MAKE YOUR OWN SCRIPT EVEN! and play with it, you never know what you can get from it. As a singer and songwriter I love reading in general but mainly poetry, oh my god reading poetry is so wholesome, it helps me find inspiration and learn new words. Also something that probably we leave for the kids or something that we don’t think of doing is painting and drawing, just relaxing and painting helps me so much to pay attention to my thoughts and to dig in within my feelings.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am an Actress, singer, songwriter, model and producer from Chile based in NYC. I started with musical theater when I was 6 years old where I portrayed Cinderella, Queen of hearts, Sugar plum fairy among others; and because of that I started loving singing, along with the songwriting, where firstly I was making songs from the Disney princesses perspectives.
I came from Chile to NYC when I was 18 years old to study at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I was fully trained to be an actress and that’s because of the great teachers from AADA.
I graduated a year ago now and It’s been a great roller coaster, I’ve been working in front and behind the scene in short films and theater shows either acting, as a PA, stage manager, etc.
My latest work was for an upcoming Netflix show called “Zero Day” with Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan and some others great actors. That was a great experience to learn about how the real world works.
As in now, I am starting my own production company with Sebastian Montenegro and Lorlly Varela and we are very excited to see where this is going to take us!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Definitely, discipline, Confidence and Alexander Technique. As an Actor, especially when you are starting, everything will be up to you; You will be the one going to auditions, filming self tapes, submitting on apps, etc; And if you are not capable to make a schedule or organize yourself it can be really hard to hearing back from projects/get things done, and I am saying this because I have been there. Sometimes is hard finding a balance but you have to think that in every step, you are closer to achieve your goal.
Confidence is a tough one, when I just got here was hard since my first language is not English and I allowed that to be the only thing describing who I was, that made me feel really small and truly claustrophobic within myself; I was never giving my 100% because of how self conscious I was. With that experience I realized that If you don’t believe you are ready for something or if deep inside you are not recognizing how hard you are working, it can be really hard to have little wins. Give you a hug one in a while, you are doing just fine and everyone’s situation is different, don’t compare yourself.
Lastly, Alexander Technique. If I am being honest, before AADA I never heard of it, but It allowed me to feel more comfortable when I move and to feel better within my body. Now it’s vital for me to do a lay down or some exersices before every single thing I do, so if you don’t know what it is PLEASE check it out.
Besides all that, an advice I can give is to trust yourself and never take your eyes out the goal, even though is okay to get distracted sometimes.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m overwhelmed, taking a step back and breaking things down usually helps as well as taking a break. Especially as an actor, sometimes can be hard to find the balance to do it since when you are starting you have all the power. So making the time to practice self-care, limiting distractions, planning and organizing yourself and after that sticking to it can be hard but very beneficial if you put it into practice. As an artist, feeling overwhelmed is not uncommon, especially when facing creative blocks, deadlines, etc.
